One year ago, we witnessed a violent assault on the Capitol. Many of us continue to struggle with the horrors and shocking images we witnessed as we strive to heal as a nation. The events on January 6 of last year shook me to my very core. 🧵
Throughout our history, even during times of war and civil unrest, America has always been able to peacefully transition power. But last year, we witnessed a nightmare, an assault on the symbol of American democracy—our nation’s Capitol.
Since then, countless members of Congress continue to break their oaths to protect and defend our democracy.
We cannot allow the events of January 6 to be whitewashed and rewritten. This attack was fueled by hatred, enabled by the former president, and perpetuated by lies.
It was an assault on one of America’s most fundamental freedoms: the right to have your vote counted in a free and fair election.
Today, we remember the lives lost and honor the brave heroes who stood up in the face of anger and chaos to protect the Capitol and refused to let an angry and violent mob prevent them from doing the work of democracy.
On the first anniversary of January 6, we pray for all those who were affected and commit ourselves to continue the fight to secure and strengthen our democracy, defend the rule of law, protect the right to vote for all, and hold all those responsible for this attack accountable.

Today, we learned that thanks to President Biden and Democrats’ leadership the economy added over 6.4 million jobs in 2021—the most in a single year—and unemployment is now below 4%, the lowest of the pandemic. 🧵
This is another reminder that President Biden’s economic plan is working. Wages are up, everyone who wants a job can get one, and one of the fastest economic recoveries in history continues to power ahead.
Over the last few weeks alone, the Biden-Harris administration has taken significant steps to drive down the price of food, dramatically ease supply chain bottlenecks, and ensure Americans can safely celebrate the holiday season.
Folks, my holiday cookie recipe is perfect for Christmas this year—but there probably won’t be enough left to leave out for Santa. I hope you all have fun making (and eating!) these cookies this holiday season. 🧵
For the cookies: 3/4 cup butter flavored shortening
1 1/4 cups sugar
2 eggs
3 1/2 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup canned milk
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the frosting:
3 cups powdered sugar 1/3 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
🧵 And now back to the program… Peggy Noonan and the unrelenting hit job that she & the GOP right wing are trying to put on VP @KamalaHarris . And before I hear the M. Obama quotes… had y’all properly checked this in the 80s I wouldn’t have to in ‘21.. so don’t want to 👂 it.
The right seems threatened by smart, strong-willed, free thinking women & POC. Don’t believe me- see Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, & now Kamala Harris. In their strategy to “mean girl”them out of existence- they target their looks, mannerisms, & personalities to “otherize” them.
And over the years Noonan has been the queen of Otherizing. With eloquent prose, timed hair flips, & dramatic deep-breath pauses, she has attempted to define the aforementioned (& Obama) as outside of the American mainstream, but to her Trump’s style made him appear “normal.”
Folks, there is no better feeling than being able to reconnect with family and friends this Thanksgiving—but eating my red velvet cake is a very close second. I hope you and everyone you’re visiting with on Thursday take some time to indulge!
Cake Ingredients:
2 ½ cups flour
1 ½ cups sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cocoa powder
½ tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 ½ cups oil
3 tbsp. red food coloring
1 tsp. distilled white vinegar
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
I want to take a moment to highlight some incredible Democratic leaders across the country who won and made history yesterday. 🧵
.@wutrain made history as the first woman and first person of color to be elected the mayor of Boston. Wu, the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, breaks the city’s 199-year streak of electing white, male mayors.
.@aftabpureval made history by becoming the first Asian American ever elected as mayor of Cincinnati, running to fight for all workers and families in the Queen City.
.@TerryMcAuliffe ran a tireless campaign to move Virginia forward into a brighter future and while we came up short, families across the commonwealth are better off because of his service.
The votes are still being counted in Virginia down ballot races and we will work with those teams to make sure every vote is counted. Make no mistake, we will learn from this election. This is a wake up call. Now it is time to get things done for the American people.
We must deliver upon our promises, while we sharpen our message and define the Republican Party for who and what they represent.
