⏮️LET'S HIT REWIND!

Exactly a year ago, the #Jan6thInsurrection took place.

We interviewed @moonalice, a member of @FBoversight, which is one of our very own US projects, about the role of tech platforms, specifically #Facebook, in aiding this unfortunate event.
.@Moonalice explains: "people who attacked the Capitol... probably two years earlier could not have imagined themselves... attacking the seat of government... These are people who were manipulated and the tool that was used to manipulate them was the internet. Mostly #Facebook".
Showing how the #Jan6thInsurrection was telling of a rot in US democracy, @Moonalice explains that the people behind the riots were "people who are normally charged with protecting our democracy", like people from the President's administration & "active duty or retired military"
Highlighting the lack of #accountability of people in positions of power & of the tech leaders a whole year after the incident, @Moonalice warns that democracy is in danger, "because there's nothing to stop them doing it again".
@Moonalice: "If the internet platform builds a business based on retention, as #Facebook... and others have done... the algorithms are going to drive those extreme ideas into the mainstream and radicalise people".

And that's what happened on #Jan6th. We need accountability now!
The erosion of democracy is not something isolated to the US. As our work about British politics and state of democracy shows, there is a similar trend here as well. Have a look ⏬

🚨NEW: @allthecitizens and @WilsonsLondon will be taking the government to court for approving Supermax, who've faced persistent allegations of forced labour, as a registered supplier of PPE to the UK.
theguardian.com/global-develop…
In 2020, Supermax won a £311 contract to supply gloves to the NHS.

They've since been included on a further £6bn framework agreement to continue supplying PPE despite the allegations, so severe that last October the US banned imports from the company.
The move came after and investigation which identified 10 of the 11 International Labour Organisation's indicators of forced labour in Supermax-run facilities.

🚨NEW: This week's PMQs fact check with @Femi_Sorry in which Boris Johnson manages to lie about the past, the present and the future of this country.

New Year, same old Johnson.
@Femi_Sorry He's unbelievable (and should not be believed).
While Boris Johnson, in his parallel universe, lies about it, rising inflation is impacting your life already

🚨Over 100 British organisations have signed a joint letter to the House of Lords opposing the government’s controversial Nationality and Borders Bill. 🧵
The letter calls for an amendment protecting the rights of ethnic minority citizens in Britain, in the face of the proposed new ‘blanket’ powers to revoke citizenship without notice.
thelondonpost.net/over-100-briti…
The Bill, which enters its second reading in the House of Lords today, has been widely condemned as ‘overtly racist’, and that it would render many British citizens of African, Caribbean and Asian descent “second class citizens”.

🚨NEW: Leaks cast doubt on Liz Truss’ explanation for using £1,400 of taxpayer money to fund a private lunch at the elite club of a multi-millionaire Tory donor. 🧵 Image
The former secretary of state for international trade had “insisted” on booking the Mayfair-based 5 Hertford Street (5HS) members venue, owned by millionaire aristocrat Robin Birley, a major Brexit supporter and donor to the Conservatives and PM.
independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
In leaked Emails, Truss reportedly “explicitly asked that we book 5 Hertford Street” and “refused to consider anywhere else”, despite, as one civil servant put it, the venue being “obviously incredibly expensive and more than I understand we’d usually pay”
