Want to be the best at your craft?

The answer is more straightforward than you think.

This hidden gem story about Kobe Bryant will show you how. πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡
In 2007, Nike hosted the first-ever Kobe Bryant Skills Academy.

A 3-day mini-camp with the country's top high school and college players.

All there to learn from Kobe - the best player in the game.
Nike also flew out Alan Stein Jr.

@AlanSteinJr is a world-renowned coach, speaker, and author.

He spent 15+ years working with the best basketball players on the planet.

The story starts with Alan.
Alan gets to camp, and the first chance he gets, he walks over to Kobe.

He asks Kobe if he could watch one of his private workouts.

Kobe replies:

"Sure, man. I'm going tomorrow at 4."

This response leaves Alan confused.

The first camp workout is at 3:30.
Kobe senses his confusion.

Gives him a wink πŸ˜‰

And says: "Yeah, that's 4am."
Alan has no excuse not to show.

What else could he be doing at 4am?

So he takes it as an opportunity to impress Kobe.

He shows up at 3:30am.
As Alan gets out of his cab at 3:30am, he can see that the gym light is already on from the parking lot.

As he gets closer, he starts to hear a ball bouncing and sneakers squeaking.

Alan enters the gym, and Kobe is already in a full sweat.
Kobe was going through an intense warmup before his workout started.

So Alan sits down and begins to watch.

And what he sees shocks him.
For the first 45 min, he watched Kobe practice the most basic footwork and offensive moves.

Stuff that Alan routinely teaches to middle school players.

But Kobe was practicing these moves at an unmatched level of precision.
The next day, Alan sees Kobe at camp and can't help but ask:

"You're the best player in the world. Why are you doing such basic drills?"

Kobe smiles and replies:

"Why do you think I'm the best player in the world?

Because I never get bored with the basics."
Let that sink in.

"I never get bored with the basics."

People tend to overcomplicate many challenges in life - myself included.

But most success comes from small things performed consistently over an extended period.
As soon as we realize this, it starts showing up everywhere.

The Twitter account with 500k followers.

The newsletter with 100k subscribers.

The business worth $1 billion.

None of that happened overnight.

βœ… Small actions.
βœ… Done consistently.
βœ… Over an extended period.

So many high-growth startups focus only on acquisition numbers.

But increasing customer retention rates by 5% can increase profits by 25-95%!

THREAD: 15 customer retention principles to boost your business
1/ Choose Your Welcome Offer Wisely

Less generous offer:
β€’ Fewer customers ❌
β€’ Higher quality βœ…
β€’ Higher retention βœ…

Generous offer:
β€’ More customers βœ…
β€’ Lower quality ❌
β€’ Lower retention ❌

Use an offer that strikes an optimal balance between quantity vs quality.
2/ The 80/20 Rule

Aslo known as the Pareto Principle.

Suggests that roughly:

20% of your customers will make up 80% of your repeat revenue.

I have found this to be mostly true at every company I've ever worked for.

Know who your 20% are and treat them like royalty.

It’s been almost 3 months to the day since my first thread.

Over that time:
+7,400,000 impressions
+7,400 followers

I attribute it all to @SahilBloom and his Audience Building Course.

His next cohort class takes place in January.

If you want to grow on Twitter, read this πŸ‘‡πŸ§΅
Context (1/2):

On 9/10/21, I saw this tweet from Shaan.

2 days later I purchased the course.

Context (2/2):

On 9/25 I binge-watched 5 days worth of recordings from the class because I couldn't attend live.

I fired off my first thread on 9/27

Over 300 billion emails are sent daily.

Few are worth your attention.

How do you stand out?

THREAD: A newsletter framework everyone should model after.
I've sent over 100,000,000 marketing emails in my career.

I've subscribed to hundreds of newsletters.

Alex Garcia's (@alexgarcia_atx) "Marketing Examined" newsletter checks all the boxes.

Let's break down 5 ways he's able to cut through the noise πŸ‘‡
1/ He stands out in the inbox

Two tactics:

1. The signature emoji πŸ”

It's memorable and makes it easy to find his emails.

2. The profile gif

He is the only person in my inbox that has this.

Unique and hard to miss.

Everyone on Twitter has advice on how to improve your marketing.

But who's looking out for the customer?

THREAD: Stop falling for these 10 marketing tricks.
1/ The Decoy Price

A few items are listed next to each other.

Each product has a different price.

One is intentionally overpriced.

The overpriced item makes the lower-priced items look more appealing.
2/ The Left Digit Effect

The first number we read is the left-most number.

This causes us to overvalue it psychologically.

$50.00 vs $50.01 feels the same.

$49.99 vs. $50.00 feels like a much bigger difference.

That's why most prices end in $0.99

We're all too busy at work.

But we don't need to be.

10 ways to work smarter, not harder 🧡
1/ Frontload your day/week

Put your most important tasks at the beginning of your day/week.

You'll have more energy to tackle them early on before distractions pop up.

Pro tip: identify your ONE BIG THING each day πŸ‘‡
2/ Set shorter deadlines

Parkinson's Law says that work expands to fill the time available for its completion.

If you're about to start a month-long project, ask yourself:

"What does the 2-week version look like?"

Shorter deadlines force you to focus on what matters.

If you're 47 or younger, you're a time billionaire.

Are you using that time wisely?

THREAD: How to get more value out of your time.
1/ I heard about the time billionaire concept for the first time last week.

@APompliano announced that he would be returning all outside capital from Pomp Investments to his investors.

He cites the time billionaire concept as one of the main reasons why.
2/ Instead of making wealthy people even wealthier, he wants to:

β€’ Spend more time with family.
β€’ Continue educating the average citizen about personal finance, crypto, etc.

How awesome is that?

It sent me down a rabbit hole of trying to understand the value of time better.
