This looks a bit hairy. Another colossal tropical atmospheric river driven rain event, this time all the way up the Eastern Seaboard at the same time.
Fortunately it will soon move out into the Atlantic.
Like the forecast Middle East Event come, this has very high IWVT numbers.
The difference is that this event is fast moving and its total duration appears to be 48 hours vs a forecast 72 hours for the intense period of what is coming in Saudi Arabia in a few days time.
This is a 63 hour IVWT forecast for this US Mid West/East Coast #ExtremeWeather event which is still underway.
And the corresponding rain forecast quantities.
The UK daily express described the storm thus: "Freak weather rips through US as extreme snow bomb cyclone buries East Coast cities" >> express.co.uk/news/weather/1…

@TRTWorld round up of extreme weekend weather across the US including this event.
Also similar to what is forecast in the Middle East, the sources of water which combine to produce the extreme weather event are numerous.

A special request to gobal news media. Please do not report this as fact. TPLF's efforts at peace ended the day they announced them with attacks on Ab'ala in Afar.

A major TPLF offensive in Western parts of Tigray was launched on or about December 28th.
This offensive has continued and intensified over the past 13 days, and the air-strikes that Reda Getachew complains about are part of the defensive operations against a renewed offensive, which appears to be aimed at opening a path to Sudan.
This offensive remains large scale renewed use of unarmed child soldiers and civilians as human waves and human shields. It is obscene in the extreme. And 1000s more innocent conscripted Tigrayans are dying for the TPLF leadership.

News emerged about the tragedy on January 8th on social media. Tourists caught and buried in the snowstorm in their cars were the victims. Tweet 1/2 from @Arab_storms

Widespread rains have started to fall over Egypt, the Sinai and in Jordan as expected as the active phase of a new #MiddleEast #ExtremeWeather event which is expected to run for the next nine days begins.

This is the 2nd large regional rain event in January.

#ClimateChangeNow.
The event is exactly as forecast, though timing and location of rain fall, particularly heavy rainfall is extremely hard to forecast.

This is the satellite presentation of the event this morning. There are two streams which are delivering rain, now dividing over the Red Sea.
3 hour update to 3.45pm local time. The size of the cloud covered area is now 1.5 million KM2. If past is prologue the heaviest rainfall should be expected over night as the atmosphere cools.

This points to a need for the Govt. Of Ethiopia to operate a 24/7 media response desk which proactively talks to reporters, explains things to them on background and provides opportunities for them to conduct IVs and generally provides them with the sort of service they require.
I appreciate there is no trust and that the military situation is complicated and makes things difficult. But the value of such an effort and investment would be massive. One side needs to rebuild the trust and that has to be the GoE. @mfaethiopia ought to be involved.
Also media domestic and international need an update from @PMEthiopia urgently on the war, diplomatic efforts, the humanitarian situation and the prisoner release via @BilleneSeyoum.
