A lot of people speculate that he was in fact the legend himself #Satoshi and some major events point to the same.
But, Hal Finney denied these rumours and claimed not to be the genius behind Bitcoin.
Then who was he?
In simple words, He was no less than a legend who made paramount contributions and helped make #Bitcoin what it is today.
Hal Finney was a software engineer who worked for PGP Corporation and was an early member of the Cypherpunk movement.
In 2004 he created the first Reusable Proof of Work System to be used as token money. It remained the only RPoW system until 2009.
But, the most striking & notable detail of Hal’s history is his connection with #Bitcoin
He was the first person to support the Bitcoin network & run the Bitcoin software after #SatoshiNakamoto
And this is just a fraction of his overall involvement & contribution to #Bitcoin
Just a day before Bitcoin’s first-ever transaction done by #Satoshi himself, Hal Finney posted on Twitter “Running Bitcoin”.
A tweet which now is without a doubt the most iconic tweets on #Bitcoin
On 12th January, the first #Bitcoin transaction of 10 Bitcoin happened between Satoshi and Hal Finney.
Since then, Hal and #Satoshi remained in contact for a period through emails. Together they worked on fixing the early bugs in the Bitcoin network and making it more secure.
Hal was one of the first people to accept Satoshi’s Whitepaper on #Bitcoin and went as far as to predict that the value of each coin in the near future could be as high as ‘10 million USD’ back when they were valued at 0.
Hal also predicted the boom of #NFT back in 1993. Here’s one of his emails where he’s talking about “crypto trading cards”.
The first person to mine #Bitcoin after Satoshi was again, Hal Finney.
In one of his emails, he mentioned mining “Block 70-something”.
Hal had similar views as #Satoshi on money and the need for a system that gives people financial freedom and this was one of the major reasons why Hal saw the potential behind #Bitcoin
Here is a quote from one of Finney’s Cypherpunk mail back in 1992.
Whether he was #Satoshi or not, Hal Finney's contribution to #Bitcoin and making it what it is today can’t go unnoticed.
He completely immersed himself in the development and acceptance of Bitcoin.
Even when he was battling through ALS, a disease that paralyzed most parts of his body, Finney never stopped working.
During this time he was working on a system which was "designed to support Trusted Computing, to harden Bitcoin wallets” as per one of his last emails.
For years, Hal worked on ensuring the authenticity and practicality of the #Bitcoin network
Hal Finney paved the way for the practical acceptance of Bitcoin for which we are all very grateful.
On August 28, 2014, Hal Finney passed away after a long battle with ALS.
It’s been 13 years since Hal's iconic tweet.
Today he is no more but #Bitcoin (and of course his tweet) is still running.
