Remembering Jean Delannoy on his birthday 🎂

"Going into the Billancourt studios briefcase in hand, you would have sworn he was going to an insurance office."
- Jean-Luc Godard
In Cahiers du Cinéma, Godard & Truffaut denigrated Delannoy & his "cinema of quality".
Willy Ronis
Tournage de La Part de l'ombre, Sonzay, 1945
A striking shot of Jean Wall during the production of Jean Delannoy's film. Ronis must have enjoyed the chance to take advantage of studio lighting. @MAPatrimoine
The goat is trying hard to upstage Gina Lollobrigida in this shot by Raymond Voinquel. She was playing Esmeralda in Jean Delannoy's Notre Dame de Paris, 1956.
Roger Corbeau
Michèle Morgan in Jean Delannoy's La Symphonie pastorale, an adaptation of an André Gide novella, made in 1946. Morgan won the inaugural Best Actress award at Cannes for her performance. @MAPatrimoine

I'm reading Will Friedwald's 2017 book The Great Jazz and Pop Vocal Albums.
His 1995 book Sinatra! The Song Is You: A Singer's Art is indispensable. It won the 1996 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Excellence in Music Criticism.
Will Friedwald's heartbreaking story about Tony Bennett & Bill Evans. 💔
"I wanted to tell you one thing: just think truth and beauty. Forget about everything else. Just concentrate on truth and beauty, that’s all."
Friedwald is a fine writer, & has a personal connection with many of these musicians. He co-wrote Tony Bennett's 1998 autobiography. He dishes about Blossom Dearie, but his essay on My Gentleman Friend, from 1959, is such a perceptive appreciation of her art as singer & pianist.

So great to learn more about Judith Joy Ross. Wonderful portraits, & from my old stomping grounds in Eastern Pennsylvania.
Untitled, Eurana Park, Weatherly, Pennsylvania, 1982.
This Judith Joy Ross shot is one of the great American photographs.

Remembering Gwen Verdon on her birthday 🎂
📷 Tony Vaccaro, New York, 1953
"Widely regarded as the best dancer ever to brighten the Broadway stage, Ms. Verdon was also a performer who brought more than physical excitement to her roles."

A truly remarkable portrait

Remembering Roland Petit on his birthday 🎂
📷 Jean Mounicq, Paris, 1962
"He was a visionary choreographer who created roles that could change you artistically, aesthetically, technically, as a dancer."

The two were married from 1954 until Petit died in 2011. Today we're celebrating his birthday 🎂

The Ronettes by Ray Avery, 1963
When Brian Wilson heard "Be My Baby",
"I balls-out totally freaked out when I heard. It was like having your mind revamped. It's like, once you've heard that record, you're a fan forever."
Ray Avery took some awesome photographs of The Ronettes at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles, 1963. Too bad most of them include Phil Spector. Here's a lovely shot: Veronica (Ronnie) Bennett, her sister Estelle, & their cousin Nedra Talley. #RIP Ronnie Spector

Happy birthday Haruki Murakami 🎂

"I wake up early in the morning and I play a record, a vinyl record, when I'm writing. After 10 or 15 minutes I forget about the music, I just concentrate on my writing. But still I need some kind of music, good music."
Recommended: Haruki Murakami's Absolutely On Music, Conversations With Seji Ozawa. Great insights on the connections between music & writing, and wonderful stories of a lifetime of conducting from the Maestro. amzn.to/3BGUrNb
Seiji Ozawa & Haruki Murakami by Nobuyoshi Araki, 2016
Ozawa says about Murakami, "He doesn’t just love music, he *knows* music."
