Even when there was some reasonable validity to the Trump and Russia story, on policy Trump kept a very steady policy of increasing policy pressure on Russia and ended even more hawkish than the last 4 years of the Obama administration. Biden has done nothing but try to 2/n
play nice or walk back Trump pressure policies and well here we are. Trump administration foreign policy on Europe and specifically Germany was you need to a) wear your big boy leiderhosen taking a greater role in your own security b) stand up to authoritarians. Trump admin 3/n
got blasted for this. Biden administration has definitely rolled back those talking points and policy pressures. What is the result? Even with a new government, Germany is as ready as ever to appease and play footsie with Russia, China, and others content to let the US foot 4/n
The security bill. What has happened? Well right in the middle of a European crisis, Europe is basically a non-player. Irrelevant. Rather than at least trying to fast track an LNG plant in Hamburg for delivery from the US or other solutions, they are literally a non-player. 5/n
I have often joked that diplomacy is like the first day of prison: make sure to mess someone up on the first day just to let others know not to mess with you. Biden administration has purposefully opted to go with weak negotiating hands and not use leverage and the results 6/n
Are clear what happens. Even if you disagree with HOW or WHAT Trump approached or saw in these problems, you could still play the hand he left you with MUCH MUCH better to realized much better outcomes. These are simply not serious people in very serious jobs.
