In my quest to look for a way to make complex timelines for a project I'm working on (on the model of this image), I found some apps/links that might be useful for those doing historical, project, data visualization, etc. work and need open-source (or free) tools. A rhread.
For institutions which are always cash-strapped, this open-source method for putting up online exhibitions seems wonderfully relevant. omeka.org/classic/
Particularly promising is this, which intersects timelines with exhibitions, potentially very exciting once one can figure it out! neatline.org/about/
My work on #InquirerBriefing made me admire folks who can do data visualizations and this open source facility makes it possible: potentially very exciting and useful for academics, journalists, etc. app.datawrapper.de
If what you see are shorter, simpler timelines, this open-source method can work if what you are putting together is only about 10 entries' worth or so: timeline.knightlab.com
Not open source, but beautiful-looking and which has a free version that has some good use for it (you can make one timeline), is this: tiki-toki.com
But what has me the most excited and for which I will try to get my feet wet, is from this suite of open source tools... viseyes.org
It's called Visual Eyes and seems incredibly rich, and powerful, perfect, actually, for my project. And others I have in mind, so I will be doing my best to learn it. It combines timelines and maps! viseyes.org/visualeyes/?21…
Meanwhile, just in case (and still haven't applied it so much, because figuring out my podcast and including video is a major task for this year) but you might find this guide handy-dandy. reed.edu/cis/teaching-w…
Also exciting is TimelineCreator but it looks quite challenging timelinecurator.org
Since we all have to do our best to hunker down again, a playlist: some of my favorite documentaries as available on YouTube. Enjoy! youtube.com/playlist?list=…
For me, it’s simple: #LetLenLead2022 heto ang iilan sa mga dahilan… (thread)
The Senate originally was designed to be a continuing institution even as prexy and House terms expired; but making 1/2 of senate up for election instead of 1/3 as was case prior to martial law, destroyed that. Because more past losers wanted a chance to be winners.
That is why before martial law the midterms were so important when presidents and congressmen both had 4-year terms while senators had 6 year terms; 8 senators would be up for election in s presidents midterm deciding balance in the senate. An interesting note that points to the
Well-thought-out design of of the past is that even today surveys have found that the average number of senatorial candidates people remember is 8: pointing to the human suitability of the old number up for election each time. But this was changed in 1987 to give more people a
@PinoyAkoBlog very disappointing ang mga commercial mula nung filing of candidacy.
A thread of photos, just so you get to know them a little more as real people. Josefa Llanes Escoda, Vicente Lim, and Jose Abad Santos.
Josefa Llanes Escoda's personality shines through even in black and white photos; her being suffragette, and organizer for women's groups and the Girl Scouts points to her being a charismatic leader. She's in the terno with the sunburst pattern.
One can't help but be amazed with the wide range of causes Josefa Llanes Escoda was remarkable in, from the campaign to secure women the vote, to founding the Girl Scouts, to working for poor children as in this Tondo event in 1938. She's left most in the 1st photo.
This is the big bonanza that makes everything worthwhile for supporting the president: the transformation of telecoms from a public utility to something else: allowing foreign ownership but giving Congress the delightful duty of approving franchises for operations to be allowed.
I've been following this story, literally, for years, in the context of China Telecoms and its bid to be the Third Player. 11/22/2017, 2/14/2018, 7/17/2019 just for the saga of Uy.
Two follow-ups after the Uy matter was (temporarily, it now seems) settled: 4/14/2021 and 7/28/2021
