Makar is sign of Capricorn, sankranti means transmigration of sun from 1 sign to another, in this case Capricorn.

There are other Sankrantis too, for example Mesha Sankranti when Sun enters Aries, and is considered Hindu new year—April 14/15 each yr.

4/4 Coming back to Sabrimala, Ayappa Swamy controls Saturn ( ruler of Capricorn), so anyone who visits Ayappa temple is spared Saturn’s wrath or so its believed. Interestingly PRASADAM of the temple has lots of Jaggery in it, called Aravana Paysam. So its Til-Gud season! 😊
I’m not sure Aravana Paysam has Til in it but it has lots of jaggery. Til is considered good for anyone who is experiencing Saturn/ shani Dasha, as this dasha reduces the calcium in ur body. sesame is a nutritional powerhouse, high in calcium, non diary.
Going to Ayappa temple is not an easy feat as —one, the temple opens seasonly, remains closed otherwise. Two, you shld enter the temple after 41 days of fasting. Dress code and shuddhi are 2 other factors. Infact almost every temple in Kerala follows the dress-code strictly.
Those who ready themselves to go to Sabrimala, are called Swamy. They wear black. Black is associated with Saturn, it means absence of light. Remember Sun and Saturn oppose each other? Ladies above 50 visit the temple.
