🧵 A thread of #MLK speeches, sermons and interviews in which he tells inconvenient truths, shares about his philosophy of nonviolence, and expounds on injustice and what our righteous, rigorous response should be.

Relevant. Revelatory. Revolutionary.

Our #MLKDay2022 featured writing is *The World House* chapter from #MLK’s last book, ‘Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?’ Here’s an excerpt from that chapter, but we encourage you to read the entire book: beaconbroadside.com/broadside/2010…
“Nonviolence is not sterile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation.” #MLK #MLKDay #MLKDay2022 #NobelPeacePrize
“It's more difficult today because we are struggling now for genuine equality. And it's much easier to integrate a lunch counter than it is to guarantee a livable income and a good solid job.”

From ‘The Other America.’

“This problem of spiritual and moral lag, which constitutes modern man's chief dilemma, expresses itself in three larger problems which grow out of man's ethical infantilism.” From #MLK’s Nobel Peace Prize Lecture, ‘The Quest for Peace and Justice’ #MLKDay
“We’re coming to get our check.”

#MLK #MLKDay

From ‘Paul’s Letter to American Christians’: “Oh America, how often have you taken necessities from the masses to give luxuries to the classes.”

#MLK #MLKDay
Not a speech or a sermon, but an interview in which Dr. King shares powerfully and brilliantly.

#MLK #MLKDay
“I never intend to adjust myself to racial segregation and discrimination. I never intend to adjust myself to religious bigotry...”

Brief, but still #MLK.

Are you maladjusted and proud?

#MLKDay #MLKDay2022
#MLK in 1967, sounding like he’s talking in 2021: “And so the collision course is set. The people cry for freedom and the congress attempts to legislate repression.” From ‘The Three Evils of Society.’

#MLKDay #MLKDay2022
‘Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence’

Please spend some time with it.

“If America's soul becomes totally poisoned, part of the autopsy must read: Vietnam. It can never be saved so long as it destroys the deepest hopes of men the world over.”

#MLK
Not a speech or a sermon, but an interview with NBC in which Dr. King shares powerfully and brilliantly. #MLK #MLKDay
And now, ‘Letter from Birmingham Jail.’

A masterpiece.

“You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations.” #MLK

What humane human beings can do:

1. Stop denying #racism exists.

2. Be educated on racism as a grave issue of prejudice, harnessing and abuse of power, and manipulation of privilege.
3. Commit to being informed about systemic issues and about the daily devastation of racism.

4. Pay attention to those who say they are being violated by systemic racism and discrimination.
5. Care.

6. Study the global and national impact of racism and white supremacy.

7. Honestly examine systems constructed with and infiltrated by racist ideals.

Examples: Healthcare, education, criminal 'justice' (school to prison pipeline, prison industrial complex), housing…
