This was an increase in the number of deaths from the previous week (582 deaths, 6.9% of all deaths).
In England, 857 deaths involving #COVID19 were registered in the week ending 7 Jan (compared with 557 deaths registered the previous week).
In Wales, 61 deaths involving COVID-19 were registered in this week (compared with 24 the previous week).
From the week ending 13 Mar 2020 to the week ending 7 Jan 2022, the number of excess deaths above the five-year average in England and Wales was 127,704.

The positivity rate in England was 6.85% in the week ending 6 Jan 2022.
In the week ending 9 Jan 2021, when the second wave positivity was at its highest (2.08%), the hospital admission was almost twice as high and the number of deaths 10x as high ow.ly/40E250HuvqN
Hospital admission rates remained similar in England in the week ending 9 Jan 2022, at 19.03 per 100,000 people. This is a similar rate to that seen in Feb 2021.
