I wore a hearing aid in my mid-30's. Had surgery that was only mildly successful. A congressman in his 60's approached me one day to ask me about it. His wife said he needed one and he feared it would make him seem "old". 1/3
I said, "Congressman, if you are not hearing people, they think you are old and addled. If they see the hearing aid, they know it's a hearing loss issue, not a mental issue. 2/3
TV guy I dated w/hearing loss from military also had questions. I told him people would think he was a snob -- an arrogant, privileged white guy who was ignoring them, unless they saw the hearing aids. (turns out even w/o hearing loss he was an arrogant, privileged white guy) 3/3
