📍NEW “BA2” SUB-VARIANT—@UKHSA has designated a #Omicron sub-lineage, known as BA.2, as a new “variant under investigation”. 53 in 🇬🇧 but 2,093 sequences of BA.2 recorded from 22 countries. Unclear yet—but “possibility it could be more transmissible.” 🧵
news.sky.com/story/amp/omic…
2) “Initial studies from Denmark - where it's quickly taken hold and now makes up around half of Omicron cases - show no difference in hospitalisations between 'original' Omicron and BA.2. Vaccines also expected to be effective against BA.2 in fighting severe illness, says 🇩🇰
3) “However, more data is needed to test whether it could be even more transmissible.
The UKHSA's incident director, Dr Meera Chand, said the altered form of Omicron was not unexpected as it is "the nature of viruses to evolve and mutate".
4) "Our continued genomic surveillance allows us to detect them and assess whether they are significant," added Dr Chand.

BA.2 is S-gene positive - which may make it **harder to show up** 👀 as Omicron than BA.1, which accounts for 99% of cases.
5) S-gene target failure helps identify Omicron and can be picked up in PCR tests because as a rule Delta cases have the S-gene and Omicron cases don't.
6) Denmark's Statens Serum Institut, part of its ministry of health, has said hospitalisations appear to show no difference for the two Omicron lineages but that "analyses regarding infectiousness and vaccine efficiency etc. are ongoing".

7) Some experts have said it's possible the sub-lineage could spread quicker than 'original' Omicron.
8) "Consistent growth across multiple countries is evidence BA.2 may be some degree more transmissible than BA.1," tweeted Tom Peacock, a virologist from Imperial College London.
9) The subvariant #BA2 accounted for 20% of all covid-19-cases in Denmark in week 52 increasing to approximately **45% in week 2**. During the same period, the relative frequency of BA.1 has dropped. en.ssi.dk/news/news/2022…

⚠️49% MORE SEVERE IN KIDS AGE 0-4—New South Africa🇿🇦CDC report shows that #Omicron has much high case-hospitalization in kids—⬆️48.9% higher case-admission rate than Delta—25% higher in kids 5-17. 📌Kids 0-4 case-admission rate also higher than in elderly! nicd.ac.za/wp-content/upl… ImageImage
2) Where else do we see high hospitalizations in kids on par with hospitalization in elderly? In Utah, recent 2 week #COVID19 hospitalization showing huge surges in kids too 👇
3) Let’s step back and look at the pure hospitalization numbers in kids 6-17 — all time record in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿— actually 2.3x last winter’s record high. All these data from around the world are screaming for leaders to pay attention to protect kids. Kids should not be hospitalized!

⚠️NOT MILD! This 3-year-old cries “Mommy I’m scared” as he was put on a ventilator, is among almost 140 Utah children <14 who were hospitalized with #COVID19 in the past 2 weeks— 📌kids age 0-1 hospitalizations now even rivaling 🏥 in age 65-84!!! 👀

2) in the past two weeks as the number of serious infections explodes, especially among infants and kids younger than 5.

📌For very young children, one pediatric specialist said, the omicron variant may not be so much “milder” than previous strains of the virus.
3) In Salt Lake County alone, 15 children under 5 were hospitalized last week, more than double any other week of the pandemic.

⚠️SWAB THROAT + NOSE TOGETHER—“Compared to PCR testing, nasal-only & throat-only swabs each detected 64.5% of cases. By combining both the **nose & throat swab** in 1 test—the swabs were able to detect 88.7% of cases.” ➡️Where is the FDA?🧵

2) I’ve been advocating for *both* throat combined with nose swab for weeks. Both the science and lots of anecdotes supports it. Many countries do it too.
3) This story was a good real life example how a nasal test came up short but combining with throat it was able to detect it 👇

💡We need to consider this vaccine—a whole virus traditional one that may add more protection versus variants (watch the🎥 why) & mRNA-vaccine-hesitant folks can be comfortable with. ➡️The FDA should honestly authorize #COVAXIN—EUA app submitted & waiting.
2) Notably, unlike a single target spike protein vaccine line mRNA ones or the adenovirus (J&J and AstraZeneca) ones, an inactivated whole virus traditional vaccine has multiple protein targets for which the body can “learn” to build recognition and immunity if spike is mutated.
3) P.s. I own **zero** stocks in COVAXIN makers. I’ve never traded their stock.

REMINDER—when a #COVID19 wave 🌊 crests— we are only 50% through the wave… the other **half of all cases occur on the way down**. ➡️Thus, keep in mind— hitting peak means we are only halfway through a marathon. Many places have not peaked yet. Stay vigilant. 🙏

Figure @trvrb
2) here are more US states. It hasn’t peaked yet in half the states overall. Again, 50% of the cases and hospitalizations are after the peak.
3) We are a whole month into #Omicron wave and only now are people waking up that Omicron is not so “mild” as propaganda machines have foretold it to be. Only a bit milder intrinsically— but exponential math swamps any intrinsic mildness.

📍NOTA BENE—I hope the free rapid antigen #COVID19 tests mailed out by the US Postal Service are mailed when it is at least 36 degrees F (2 C )**— or else freezing temperatures can ruin the RAT kits. Make sure your test’s “control” line still works. globalnews.ca/news/8493030/c…
2) It’s not just where the kit is delivered - it’s also where the tests kits are stored during distribution. Many mail sorting centers leave mail in unheated areas - and in trucks for the morning mail run overnight. All these could break the temperature chain.
3) But sending it out is still fastest method of delivery. Please sign up today… takes 30 seconds.
