The manner in which @DrTedros appears to have delivered himself responsibility to dictate his own disciplinary process in today’s @WHO Executive Board meeting is disgraceful and reflects extremely poorly on the UN and its agencies.

It should not be allowed to stand. @WHO is a global organization funded publicly to the tune of well over $4 Billion USD per year.
It is a tragedy, and perhaps a symptom of the malaise which bedevils a UN system which hasn’t evolved in any meaningful manner since its establishment in 1948.
Completely separate from the serious allegations raised by the Govt of Ethiopia about his partiality in favour of a rebel group in which he is part of the leadership, it is wholly inappropriate for @DrTedros to be standing unopposed for such an impt. global position.
And the question ought to be asked: why is this the case?
Especially given that he has failed spectacularly to deliver a successful global response to the Covid 19 pandemic, with %90+ of people in least developed nations having not yet received an opportunity to be vaccinated.

The @WHO, like most UN organizations lacks proper accountability mechanisms.
The @WHO Executive Board consists of a committee of 34 people (according to its website), all of whom hold significant public offices already. Mostly either Ministers or Directors General of health.

Moreover as @WHO is itself a funder of health services/programs and research, it’s EB members, many from poor nations might be quite reasonably disinclined to rock the boat/bite the hand that feeds.
Which leads me back to my initial question, why is it that @DrTedros is standing unopposed exactly?

The world’s 8 billion people are entitled to expect an effort to be taken to ensure that someone holding such high office is worthy of his/her position.
And is an attempt to use some kind of procedural sleight of hand to engineer an outcome where you get to decide on your own disciplinary procedure the sort of conduct we should expect from such a position holder?
Maybe in the current UN system of unaccountable leaders this is indeed exactly what we expect. But it ought not to be. And if this is the case, is it acceptable?
Speaking as a journalist who had been focused on the war in Ethiopia started and led by @DrTedros’s former, mostly pathological TPLF colleagues, I don’t think Dr Tedros should be in any j in’s of public office anywhere.
And on the basis of a very preliminary inquiry into @DrTedros’s use and manipulation of @WHO’s public communication assets and platforms to pursue a personal agenda which is aligned with that of a group of people who are destined to be tried by the ICC For war crimes….
…. I can’t see any reason why he should be allowed to be in any form of public office anywhere.
