3 BIG lessons.

All learned after 6 years of home automation—from:

• A billionaire developer who owns half of NJ
• 2 dummies making 8-figures
• The guy who saved his business but lost his marriage.

First up...

I was a low-voltage technician.

There are luxury apartment buildings in NJ called Xchange.

And we broke ground for the first building in 2009.

But before that...

75% of the units were pre-sold.

When we were close to finishing one building...

Pre-sales would begin for the next.

Not a penny was spent on labor until 75% of the units were pre-sold.

Lesson 1:

Sell before you build.

2 years later...

I was #3—the project manager.

#1 used to build houses by himself.

And #2 was a yogi-turned-salesman.

When they first started out...

They knew nothing about home automation.

But an architect was desperate to find someone who could do it.

So...

#1 stepped in to figure it out.

And while #2 was homeless...

He saw #1 struggling.

So...

He offered to help.

And he didn't ask for money.

Just lunch.

Years later they poached me from somewhere else.

Remember...

They knew nothing about home automation.

When they hired me they still knew nothing.

It was a miracle they were still in business.

They made big mistakes along the way.

And they were shat on for it.

I used to watch them and think...

"How are they still getting clients?"

But they kept showing up.

Understand...

I knew more than them.

I was more skilled than they were.

But THEY hired ME.

And last I checked...

They’re 10 employees strong.

And they bring in 8-figures.

Here's what #1 and #2 still do that they've always done...

Lesson 2:

They take responsibility.

And they hold onto it—no matter what.

Because whoever takes responsibility is the leader.

Last one:

Another 2 years later...

I became a home automation consultant.

But first...

I was an employee.

The boss tried to lay me off.

The next day he paid me a consulting fee.

What I made in a week he paid me for the day.

The thing is...

He was getting divorced.

And he didn’t think the business would survive.

But we repositioned his company...

From "do-it-all" to home theater installs only.

And for the first time...

We didn't have to chase clients.

Because they were coming to US.

The company thrived.

But...

His marriage didn’t.

The last thing I heard him say to his wife:

“I give you everything and you’re still not happy.”

Lesson 3:

You can run your business on "autopilot".

Not your marriage.
