1./ Nigeria is at a dangerous and vulnerable place. Political leaders have failed the people. The jury is out on the quality of our spiritual leaders across the board, and it’s not looking good except for a few. The family unit is buffeted from all sides.
2./ Parents are under pressure to earn a living to sustain their families. The business of earning a living translates to long days for many parents often leaving them too exhausted at the end of the day to have proper oversight of their young wards.
3./ These young people are often guided more by the standards of pop culture than any values which parents may pass down (assuming the parents have a solid moral compass).

In other cases, despite working long and hard, people see little or no returns,
4./ yet see others who seem to be getting away with the rewards of crime. For those with weak moral fibre or greed, they actively urge their children to follow the path of “easy” money.

We under-acknowledge the impact of the reality of many young people.
5./ They see parents who have spent a lifetime working hard with little or nothing to show for it, and they wonder if the same cycle awaits them. Unemployment, under-employment and overwhelming odds against the one who desires to earn an honest living.
6./ In this same society, they see politicians and others who do not seem to work particularly hard living in wealth. They see that on one hand society complains about these people and derides their source of wealth, yet, the same society which complains,
7./celebrates those they complain about.

The so-called corrupt ones are honoured & revered by society. The message the youth get is only one thing; Money stops nonsense. Get rich or die trying.

The man who wants to lift you out of poverty gives you 10k, says go & make a life.
8./ Yet 10k cannot buy him a snack and that 10k is meant to change your life, will you accept it?

The same man tells you he will pay you 30k and expects you to jump for joy, will you?

The verbal message is at odds with the reality. People say take your time,
9./work & grow, trust the process. Your time will come. Yet, everyday images & experiences abound to show that in Nigeria, it’s a toss-up whether the process will align to favour you or not.

The music and the movies all make it clear that “if you no get money, hide your face.”
10./ These are the songs the youth have on replay and this has been proven to be true in their experience time and again.

We give examples with “our parents” and the standards they upheld. But we must pause and wonder; the parents many of us give as examples of moral rectitude
11./ were products of a different society. Who knows if in a different set of circumstances, that generation of parents might be different? As it is, many parents in the world of today bend the rules to make ends meet. Not necessarily “big” crimes,
12./ but it usually starts small and it grows. So parents sef get their own for body. (Not an excuse just laying out the facts).

We are all products of our environment. Sadly, as bad as it looks, the worst is yet to come. We are sitting on a ticking time bomb.
13./ The number of out of school children and youth who are ill-equipped to do anything else but beg or commit crime should alarm us all.

The time to look inwards and take responsibility is now.

Now.

Not because we absolve government,
14./ but because whether we leave it for government or not, the results will not leave any of us unscathed.

We each have to actively create the society we want. Deliberate actions within our sphere of influence.

Are your driver’s children in school?
15./ Is your housekeeper’s child in school?

Can you adopt a family in church? Around you?

Can you gainfully employ someone?

Maybe it’s too little. But the alternative of doing nothing is scarier.

Just Between Us

1./“The nature of a secret is that it is hidden, confidential, known only to a few. This is often with good reason. When people have a secret, it’s probably best to leave it between them. Knowledge isn’t always power and ignorance can be bliss. . .
2./ That is until the effect of ignorance bites you in the ass.

In my experience, silence isn’t always golden and may in fact be harmful to the one who’s not in the know. So while the ability to keep secrets may be a good trait,
3./ it is vital that we are able to differentiate between that which ought to be kept secret, and that which must be told.

My name is Kike Akinnibosun and it’s my pleasure to welcome you to today’s edition of the Live Drive. We want to talk about secrets. Do you know a secret?

Is It What It Is?

1./Sometimes, in order to support a position, studies conducted to investigate a situation will be skewed. The results presented at the conclusion will support the desired premise of the researcher because results will be dependent on the sample group.
2./ Without going into instances when I’ve seen that happen, I believe that the proliferation of the use of SM has increased this problem. But perhaps we ought to interrogate the narrative presented before us.

Is it really true?

If not what is the purpose?
3./ Is it all building towards something?

Think of a movie. The audience in a movie doesn’t know where the story is going but the director knows. It’s the same with pushing a narrative using multiple seemingly innocuous nudges. What is the real reason? Where is it all going?

Standards

1./The young man who tends my garden said he needed extra money for something and would like to do some additional work for me in order to earn the money.

I asked what additional work he wanted to do.

He said he would wash the paving stones in the compound.
2./ Washing the paving stones is tasking and requires extra effort so its billed separately from his regular pay.

I wondered why he didn’t just ask me for extra money. He’s a diligent worker and I always come through for him when he has additional needs.
3./ There was no doubt that I would support if necessary. But I didn’t question why he didn’t ask for support. I only asked what he wanted the money for.

He explained that he wanted to start some small trade for his wife because when he’s away, if she runs out of money,

Reflecting

1./ My 8 year old daughter asked me if I’d like to go back in time and redo my life. She was curious to know if an opportunity to correct my mistakes is something I would like.

I paused and thought about it; and I said “No.”

She asked “Why not?”
2./ In her opinion, a do over would give me a chance to fix errors and avoid bad choices.
I paused & pondered again. Then I answered her.

“I’m the person I am today because of those mistakes and experiences. If I’d gone through life without those mistakes, without stumbling,
3./ falling, picking up myself and trying again; without fighting bad habits, overcoming some and still managing and struggling with others, I might be less understanding and forgiving of others.

But having gone through things, it is easier to live with others

1./ The Dynamics of Power

When you have power over people, especially in a place where they have little recourse to protection from any abuse of that power by you, it’s important to moderate your use of that power, being aware that they already fear their fate.
2./“Madam I’m sorry. Please don’t be annoyed.” She was trembling. Her voice was shaking and even as she spoke, she fell to her knees.

Madam wondered what her house help had done to warrant this kind of abjection.

“Please get up. I won’t listen as long as you’re on your knees.
3./ Get up, then I will listen to you.”

The house help remained on her knees. Madam turned away. When the house help realized that if she didn’t rise, she wouldn’t have Madam’s attention, she got up off her knees. Tearfully, she began to apologize.

Body Go Tell Am. . . (Part 4)

1./ “Mmmhh. . . Mmmmhh. . .” What was that tickling sensation? Amaka was caught in the throes of the most restful sleep she’d enjoyed in recent memory. She curled deeper into the foetal position flexing her feet as she did so.
2./ Her body was limp with lassitude and she was suffused by an overwhelming feeling of well-being. The tickling continued. What was that? She snuggled deeper into the warmth of her decadently plush hot-pink velvet throw.
3./ It was usually draped across the back of the sofa for exactly this purpose. Her AC could get to the super chilly sub-16℃ zone and snuggling under the throw while lounging in her elegant yet comfy living room was one of her favourite things to do.
