We approach the question of how to protect privacy through the interdisciplinary lens of #datafication, informed by the recent book of @JAnneBeaulieu & @SabinaLeonelli 'Data and Society: A critical introduction' rug.nl/news/2021/12/d…
We then go on to look at the origin of the legal protection of the (individual) right to privacy, the emergence of dataprotection #law in the 1970ies in Europe, as well as the development of informational self-determination in (West-)Germany & 'habeas data' in Latin America.
To include recent developments, we also present a couple of newly emerging approaches to tackle the a. They come from different disciplines and include 'differential privacy' to create privacy preserving statistics & algorithms, 'contextual integrity' or 'group privacy'.
