It is now 60 days until (& including) the 1st of April, 2022! April '22 marks 𝟲𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 since the British Socety for Parasitology was formed from the Parasitological Section of the Institute for Biology!
To mark this, we will be releasing a #parasite breakthough/fact (1/1)
.. every day for the next 60 days: from 1962 to 2022! We will provide information on both well-studied & unusual parasites such as Angiostrongylus cantonensis, Echinococcus vogeli, Plasmodium falciparum, Mansonella spp., Hirudo medicinalis (leeches) bed bugs, & more! (2/2).
Today, we begin with 1962! Not only was the @BSPparasitology founded in 1962, but for the first time, the full life cycle of the "eye worm" Thelazia callipaeda was described by D.P. Kozlov in the Proceedings of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Human thelaziasis is an NTD. #parasite
Are you ready for 1963? This is a big one! In 1963, Louis S. “Buddy” Diamond at the NIH, alongside 2 NMRC colleagues, released a paper describing how parasitic protozoa could be stored long-term in liquid nitrogen! Do you have cryovials of precious #parasite samples? Here's why!
In 𝟏𝟗𝟔𝟒, two US parasitologists, Paul C. Beaver & Leon Rosen, published a memorandum in @AJTMH which showed that a previously overlooked Japanese study by Nomura & Lin (1945) had identifed Angiostrongylus cantonensis as a cause for human eosinophilic meningitis. #parasite
This memorandum, alongside their own primary research into eosinophilic meningitis in Hawai’ian patients, flagged Angiostrongylus cantonensis ("rat lungworm") as a public health concern in humans, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands. #parasitology#ntds
𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟱: Two doctors in Adelaide, Australia, publish a report of 4 deaths attributed to acute pyogenic meningitis. In the remarkably similar cases, the only apparent cause was amoebae in brain tissue. They would later go on to name this protozoan pathogen Naegleria fowleri.
𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟬:Wojciech “Al” Krotoski et al publish a report in the British Medical Journal describing a dormant liver stage of #Plasmodium cynomolgi in Rhesus macaques. These dormant liver stages, called "hypnozoites" are postulated to be the cause of relapses of this #malaria species
𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟭: In 1981, Dr William C. Campbell of the Merck Institute for Therapeutic Research in the US, published "An Introduction to the Avermectins" which described a new series of compounds with potent antiparasitic properties against nematode & arthropod #parasites.
𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟳: The 52nd volume of the journal “Zeitschrift für Parasitenkunde” is released, and in it, a series of articles showing the remarkable effect of a new drug, Praziquantel, in treating cestode & trematode infections, including #Schistosoma mansoni. #schistosomiasis
𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟴: In 1978, two back-to-back papers in the Journal of Animal Ecology (Anderson & May and May & Anderson) introduced mathematical models (later validated empiracally) that integrated the processes driving #parasite population dynamics- a pivotal moment in parasite #ecology!
𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟯:In 1973, Thomas A. Miller of the University of Glasgow Vet School, had his canine hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) vaccine approved for commerical use in the US. Though discontinued in 1975, Miller's work has informed hookworm vaccine research to this day! @BAVet_Parasitol
𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟰: In Oct '73, Dr Dan Jones of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami introduced Acanthamoeba spp. as a human ocular pathogen to a meeting of the Ocular Microbiology & Immunology Group in the USA. Months later, in 1974, Nagington et al. would publish the 1st case studies
𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟬: It was in 1970 that the full life cycle of #Toxoplasma gondii was described for the 1st time by Frenkel et al. Nowadays, the micro- and macro- gametocyte stages in the cat intestine are rarely studied, so the Frenkel et al. (1970) micrographs are still informative.
𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟭: A year that would forever change the field of #malaria research. In 1971, Prof Youyou Tu of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, would use ether to extract "qinghaosu" from Artemisia annua L. leaf extract. In English: Artemisinin. @womeninmalaria
In 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟲, the eminent parasitologist P. Cyril C. Garnham published his "magnum opus", the 1132-page encyclopaedia of #malaria parasites, "Malaria Parasites and Other Haemosporidia". After 56 yrs, images from this book are still used as references across the world. #Plasmodium
𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟳- what a year! In 1967, Ruth Nussenzweig & colleagues released a @Nature paper showing that X-irradiated Plasmodium sporozoites produced protective immunity against #malaria in mice. This study sparked research that would result in the identification of CSP (1/3)
Thank you so much to Professor Maria-Gloria Basanez for all your hard work as President of the BSP. Lots of progress made during very challenging times #ParasitesOnline21
