Made a vow to mostly mind my Biz this year. But when I see a horribly wrong, IGNORANT, stupid tweet like this, I can’t help diving in 😀

1. China doesn’t give you money to do as you please with.

2. Kano-Maradi Rail is NOT a Chinese project! mota-engil.com/wp-content/upl…

#thread
“China gave you loan to build railways and you decided to build one to the deserts of Niger.”

Clearly ignorant as to how these loans work. He thinks China just hands over cash and @NigeriaGov decides to do whatever they wish with the cash.

LMAO. This is really daft, sorry
All loans from China are tied to specific projects - so far the portfolio includes Rail, Airport and ICT projects. The details are public, on @DMONigeria website.

So the idea that Nigeria can decide what to use a loan for, post-approval, suggests this person KNOWS NOTHING
All of the rail loans so far have come from China Exim Bank. Bank pays contractor directly, doesn’t give money to @NigeriaGov.

If anything it is @NigeriaGov that even drops money, in the form of “counterpart” financing (usually 15%), as a condition for loan disbursement.
The other important point is that Kano-Maradi Rail is not a Chinese project - not in the financing, not in the selected contractor!

Mota Engil that won the contract is a Portuguese construction and logistics Group!

All of this info is just a Google Search away!!!!!!!!!! ImageImageImage
Meanwhile thousands of people have liked or RT’ed that nonsense.

You people should stop coming to this App to chat nonsense. Stop coming to pontificate on stuff you have zero knowledge or understanding of. Please.

When you realize the extent to which Int’l Media sometimes get Nigeria wrong, you start to question your acceptance of their default reporting about other parts of the world you’re not familiar with.

If they can get this wrong, what else are they getting wrong?
[That’s of course not to say local media isn’t just as guilty of getting Nigeria wrong. Examples abound. But the earlier point was meant to focus on Int’l media. Local media = another chapter entirely].
One of biggest successes of traditional ‘Western’ media has been the ability to elevate a very specific, limited, often-flawed POV (hereinafter known as “Bias”) to the realms of Objective Standard, regarding reporting about ANY part of the world. An admirable achievement,no doubt.

(1/2) As of 2015, NNPC was owing more than $6 billion in unpaid Cash Calls for JVs with IOCs. @IbeKachikwu negotiated a nice discount & repayment plan. @DrMKBaru (RIP) and @MKKyari have continued the payments. As of Q4 2020, more than $3 billion of post-discount arrears paid off.

Mobil’s arrears fully cleared: google.com/amp/s/mobile.r…

Outstanding ones include arrears owed SPDC, CNL, TOTAL and NAOC. All will be paid.

[Even during the years of $100 oil nobody thought it made sense to keep up with Cash Call obligations or clear outstandings]
