DUP’s Edwin Poots has broken not only the Brexit Treaty with the EU by unilaterally stopping checks on goods entering N.Ireland but also international law. Reckless and shortsighted action on his part! 🙄
The DUP have now left the entire U.K. facing the grim prospect of the EU triggering large chunks of the Brexit deal with dire consequences for businesses and trade.
His decision to halt checks at midnight tonight has left Boris Johnson with a serious dilemma to solve in what to do with the DUP who have failed to even consult the rest of the political parties at Stormont before taking action.
Johnson must act to halt what has been labelled as a DUP electioneering stunt to woo unionist voters when they go to polls in May despite it being passed off as a matter for the (NI) Assembly. He cannot afford the political fallout and economic consequences.
Irrespective of his own desire to deflect public attention from #partygate and the opportunity the #DUP decision has presented him with to ramp up the pressure on the EU over the UK’s demands, it is much too dangerous a path to tread.
If he continues to pass the buck on this, he must accept the consequences of the EU pulling the rug completely from any trade deal with Britain and that would be catastrophic for everyone concerned.
