Do you believe Bitcoin will be the internet’s dominant currency? Then you need to know about Lightning Service Providers...

LSP's will make it possible to onboard billions to Bitcoin over the next decade.

The Lightning Economy is launching! Here’s what you need to know:

🧵👇
First, full credit to @therealkingonly who coined the term Lightning Service Provider almost three years ago. Roy has shaped this space and could see well ahead of the curve.

Start this off with reading his intro to LSPs here:

medium.com/breez-technolo…
LSP’s will prove as essential to Bitcoin’s monetary network as Internet Service Providers have been to the web.

Bitcoin is TCP/IP. Lightning is HTTP.

In other words, LN is the emerging value and trust layer of the internet.

And if that makes you feel bullish… it should!
A word on skepticism...

LN's critics argue it’s already been around 6 years, and doesn’t rival DeFi alternatives.

The answer is the protocol. It's an era of protocol innovation, and Bitcoin has established itself as the web’s value layer.

That makes Lightning inevitable.
Lightning is so exciting because now is literally the time when services and apps are taking shape that can scale to billions.

Ever wish you could've been there in the Valley's early days, or around in the 90’s through the launch of the web?

Now is that time in Lightning.
The best evidence is the thousands of people who’ve built Lightning into a viable global, instant monetary layer - purely as hobbyists!

The vast majority of people running nodes are doing it as a passion. It’s not simple and it’s growing exponentially.

Wait til LN simplifies..
Which gets us to Lightning Service Providers. As ISP's did for the web, LSP's will scale Lightning.

An LSP:

⚡️Provides liquidity to the network
⚡️Supports nodes with new channels
⚡️Routes data and payments
⚡️Rebalances channels among users
⚡️Drives reliability and redundancy
Who are examples of LSP’s?

@therealkingonly, mentioned earlier, has built @Breez_Tech.

The most focused (and only publicly traded) LSP is @LQwDFinTech, led by @shoneanstey.

Note their release this week of nodes focused on Singapore and Frankfurt:

lqwdfintech.com/news/2022/lqwd…
There are many, many other firms and individuals who can be considered LSP's, because they're building the services that can scale the Lightning Network, like @lnbig_com, @bitrefill, @BTC_LN, @Voltage

Please share others!
And also super fresh off the block from @JohnCantrell97 is Sensei.

I’m not sure if John would consider it an LSP, but its mission is to onboard billions to Lightning, so it counts!

Check it out:

l2.technology/sensei
And of course there are important groups building tools to manage and monitor Lightning nodes, like
@lightning, @blockstream, @acinq_co, @lightningdevkit...
Gotten this far, and interested in getting a Lightning node going for yourself? This thread from @purugyl is amazing and the best practical intro to Lightning I've seen.

And all of @BTCsessions's info is first-rate for your journey.

Hopefully this provides a glimpse into the potential of this space.

I believe that the Lighting Network is the dawn of an entirely new digital value protocol, with huge value to be created over the next 5-10 years.

Please share any other examples of LSPs, or what you think!

"Bitcoin only helps right-wing, privileged, 'crypto bros'".

Um, no.

Bitcoin will disproportionately benefit Africa and the African people.

But don’t take my word for it - here’s a collection of amazing African leaders building a Bitcoin economy, and why they’re doing it:
Full credit and thanks to @ndesanjo for inspiring this thread through his insightful article here. Read it for an excellent intro summary.

We’ll get to remittances, but also purposefully leave them last. On to the builders!

There is an amazing group of African leaders in Bitcoin, among them:

@obi, @ihate1999, @ojomaochai, @actuallyCarlaKC, @ChimezieChuta, @Tongayi_, @AfricanBLC and so many others.

Any mistakes below are mine alone though!

“Bitcoin is cool and all, but governments and the system will never allow it.”

I’ve heard this so many times, and it’s wrong.

Here are 5 reasons why governments the world over will soon welcome #Bitcoin:
1/ Western governments are going broke.

“In every country and era, runaway deficits and skyrocketing debt have ended in economic stagnation or ruin.” @Avik

It’s only a matter of time before the Treasury buys recent history's best returning asset:

2/ A ban isn't possible.

Bitcoin is run across tens of thousands of computers, everywhere in the world.

Trying to ban Bitcoin is like trying to ban pollen.

Govts may try to control applications: from banking to payments. But Bitcoin will march on.

“Bitcoin already consumes as much energy as a mid-sized country - it will accelerate climate change and destroy the planet.”

Actually…

Bitcoin will be a major force for good in the fight against climate change.

Here are 5 reasons why: 🧵👇
Quick context:

I believe the threat of climate change is real and urgent. I helped pass a carbon tax in Canada and believe in climate action.

And I think Bitcoin is a crucial part of a greener future.

Here are the 5 reasons:
#1: Our civilization is needs lots more energy!

We need an energy abundance agenda: massive investments in low carbon infrastructure and we need to build it fast.

Bitcoin mining can spur massive investment in clean energy.

This @tomaspueyo piece is awesome and visionary.

Everyone interested in #Bitcoin and #web3 should read it.

But I want to tug on a short thread. 👇

Help me understand why many argue Bitcoin creates trust.

unchartedterritories.tomaspueyo.com/p/the-end-of-n…
Tomas says this, about the promise of blockchain:

"Historically, how did you trust that your cab was legit? 🚕🚕 Because it had a license. From the government.

How did you know to eat in that restaurant? Because it was certified to be safe. By the government. 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳"
But now, blockchain can replace the function of the state, and so the state is headed for obsolescence.

Is this correct?

A blockchain reliably stores information.

But how and why do we trust the information stored in the chain?

1 | So you've heard of the #LightningNetwork... now you want to see real applications of it in practice.

Fair enough. Here are 14 examples of amazing products being built on Lightning right now.

Read on to see why #Bitcoin’s Layer 2 is the next big thing in finance & tech:
2 | First, a quick thanks!

Much of this info comes from the folks at @lightning and their packed December newsletter, as well as lots of time on Twitter (essentials: @therealkingonly, @RyanTheGentry and @starkness, @MaxAWebster, and @kerooke).

And so many terrific podcasts.
3 | The single best thing I've read on the #LightningNetwork is @MaxAWebster's post:
Why Lightning, Why Now.

If you're curious at all about Bitcoin or Lightning, go read it right now.

Or visit his Twitter for the thread.

Now on to the examples!
