Do you think about your homepage?

Hey there 👋. I’m @shelbyblackley, SEO Manager for @mashable & co-creator of #WTFisSEO?, a newsletter that helps news publishers do search better. 🤓

SEO for news is complex. But your homepage is a secret to ranking.

#SEOThread Image
We spend hours upon hours optimizing our daily articles so Google will rank them in Top Stories, Google News, and Discover.

We focus a ton on optimizing the:
☑️ Headlines
☑️ Decks
☑️ Slugs/URLs

of our daily news files.

#SEOThread @shelbyblackley
We wait patiently for Google to index the URL.

But what if there was a faster way for Google to find that fresh, new story you just published? 🤔🤔

The crawlers need to get to it somehow. 🧐

Enter your homepage. 🔗

#SEOThread @shelbyblackley
Crawlers enter your site from the homepage and follow the URLs linked from there.

They then index and rank your homepage stories and follow the internal links in those stories to other stories. And so on.

#SEOThread @shelbyblackley
Linking a story from your homepage speeds up the indexing process because crawlers go through your homepage first.

You’re signaling that right now, this story is important to your readers. 🚨🚨

#SEOThread @shelbyblackley
Linking from your homepage is an advantage:
☑️ Fast signal of new, fresh content
☑️ Repromote evergreen articles related to the story
☑️ Link to big investigations
☑️ Boost your org's E.A.T signals
☑️ Rank higher. Get more traffic. Get more subs. 🥪

#SEOThread @shelbyblackley
Look at the structure of your homepage:

Do you have...

🤔A "latest news" widget for articles to receive a link once published?
🤔A sidebar of "trending" articles?
🤔A section for categories, "best work" or "reader favourites"?

#SEOThread @shelbyblackley
#NewsSEO means giving visibility to as many stories as possible.

Your homepage can be the first major link your article receives. 🔗

Then, package the story. Link to it in related articles so it can be found by readers multiple ways.

#SEOThread @shelbyblackley
That may mean:
☑️ A "read more" link under the main story
☑️ A list of top stories of the day
☑️ A package of most informative stories on a topic

#SEOThread @shelbyblackley Image
Your homepage is just one component of a good news SEO strategy.

Think strategically, and work with your editors to best surface articles.

And don't forget: quality content is king, but it doesn't matter if no one finds it. 🗞️📰

We know these structures help search engines.

But did you know the significance of structure and formatting for people who use screen readers? Assistive technologies use them for in-page navigation.

Howdy! Brie E Anderson here 👋

I'm the founder of BEAST Analytics, a digital marketing analytics and strategy consultancy. I heard through the grapevine that some of y'all hate GA4... So, let's talk about it.

#SEOThread @brie_e_anderson
First thing first, what is even the point of GA4? Well, there are a few
1️⃣ Cookieless browsing is COMING
2️⃣ User journeys consist of multiple devices and properties
3️⃣ Things can change in an instant

Now, let's get started... In GA4 there is 🙅 NO MORE SAMPLED DATA! 🙅

I'm not even lying.

All standard reports in GA4 report on 100% of events even when you add secondary dimensions or comparisons.

Let's talk about search volume 🔎👀
Professional SEO marketers will look at keyword search volume averages to determine how popular—and competitive—a keyword is.
Here's how to find monthly search volume for keywords in our tool 👇
We're using the Keyword Magic Tool 🔎👀
Sort your list of given keywords by various metrics, such as click rate and volume. To search by volume, click on “Volume". We have extra features that can be helpful, like the Keyword Overview tool.
This provides additional data like localized versus global volume, keyword difficulty, and results on the SERP.
Here’s what you can expect to see when we observe a keyword like “vintage pinball:”

We are all brilliant in identifying issues and creating audits; I truly believe as SEOs we are able to take a website to the next level. But, how can we get our recommendations implemented? A 🧵 by @Kevin_Ellen_ #SEOthread Image
One of the crucial parts of getting things implemented is knowing who holds the keys to the website. Often this is not marketing, but closer to the product/development team! Which means relationships outside the marketing team will have to be created. @Kevin_Ellen_ #SEOthread
Throughout my experience I have seen many marketing teams struggle with this step; as it can be hard to effectively communicate with development teams. This is no one's fault, because the roles are different. There are ways we as SEOs can help with this. @Kevin_Ellen_ #SEOthread
