You’ve heard of the #LightningNetwork by now.

But have you seen it?

There's a gorgeous range of tools that visualize Lightning’s status and growth... here's an attempt to compile a few of them.

It turns out the internet's money can be overlaid on the world with great beauty:
A quick note off the top - if you run a Lightning node this is probably all old hat.

If you don’t, it may be reason to get one! Check out @getumbrel for the easiest way to get started.

Also, many nodes remain private, so everything below is just a portion of totals.
Beyond the fact it looks cool, the practical use of these LN node visuals is to view peers, visualize channels and watch how different routes (multi)hop BTC for a payment through the network.

As the Network's nodes grow it becomes more resilient.

We're still super early.
And full credit: this thread was inspired by @LQwDFinTech and @shoneanstey's announcement that they’re setting up nodes in Frankfurt and Singapore.

The idea of Lightning layered through the world's financial centers is fascinating.

Alright, onward!

ca.proactiveinvestors.com/companies/news…
To begin, you may want to check out the basics of who is running the top nodes on the network.

@lightning runs an up to date list here: @walletofsatoshi leads.

terminal.lightning.engineering/#/
If you want general visuals on the basic metrics of Lightning, check out @BitcoinVisuals here.

# of nodes, channels, network capacity, channel capacity, clustering, and more:

Ok the good stuff:

The most gorgeous visual of the Lightning Network I've seen is this one, by @pymoment.

It's incredible and gorgeous, and I believe it's no coincidence it closely resembles visuals of neurons in the brain:

And here's another stunning visual of LN by @pymoment.

This begins to look more like the visuals of self-organization found in biological systems.

Again, no coincidence!

Humanity's best, most lasting innovations reflect the wisdom found in nature.

On to maps!

@acinq_co runs the most visual and fully interactive of maps I've seen.

If you're like me you can spend all kinds of time exploring nodes connect through the world.

We're watching something new and powerful emerge in real time:

explorer.acinq.co/n/03abf6f44c35…
Another option for a cool interactive live map is the one run by 1ML here. Also a very functional quick search tool:

1ml.com/visual/network
And of course @ambosstech is another LN explorer that's growing quickly:

amboss.space
And there are many others! For example, @SeverinAlexB runs @lnrouter.

@lninsights, @LNstats. I'm not familiar yet with the full range of dashboards for running a node which are also out there.

And a full collection of other LN visualizing tools here:

gist.github.com/bretton/798ec3…
There are also lots of tools emerging to help people build visuals of Lightning - so all of this will develop quickly.

Here's @MichaelLevin referencing a project by @jamaljsr to learn more about:

That's it for now! I'm sure this is a fraction of what's out there so invite folks to share others.

Visuals help people understand the power of Lightning's emerging network, even if we're still in its earliest stages...

I’ve felt displaced amid several relationships of late.

You probably have too. We live in this time of deep politicization.

Why?

Because our society's values and institutions are either shifting or failing. Everyone can feel it, and it's unsettling.

Here's how to respond:
First: what's going on? it’s a human instinct to grab on more tightly to what we know.

Your world view is your anchor amid a shifting tide.

And many want to project their beliefs. They want more than an anchor - they want a battleship to stop the tide. But that won't work.
It’s unpleasant to feel another’s belief forced on us. So people push back, and a divide forms, and it gets ugly. It's evident all around us.

Alright, so what should you do?

3 things:

1: Listen to yourself, deeply. Not superficially. It takes time to hear.

Do you believe Bitcoin will be the internet’s dominant currency? Then you need to know about Lightning Service Providers...

LSP's will make it possible to onboard billions to Bitcoin over the next decade.

The Lightning Economy is launching! Here’s what you need to know:

🧵👇
First, full credit to @therealkingonly who coined the term Lightning Service Provider almost three years ago. Roy has shaped this space and could see well ahead of the curve.

Start this off with reading his intro to LSPs here:

medium.com/breez-technolo…
LSP’s will prove as essential to Bitcoin’s monetary network as Internet Service Providers have been to the web.

Bitcoin is TCP/IP. Lightning is HTTP.

In other words, LN is the emerging value and trust layer of the internet.

And if that makes you feel bullish… it should!

"Bitcoin only helps right-wing, privileged, 'crypto bros'".

Um, no.

Bitcoin will disproportionately benefit Africa and the African people.

But don’t take my word for it - here’s a collection of amazing African leaders building a Bitcoin economy, and why they’re doing it:
Full credit and thanks to @ndesanjo for inspiring this thread through his insightful article here. Read it for an excellent intro summary.

We’ll get to remittances, but also purposefully leave them last. On to the builders!

moneyweb.co.za/news/africa/bi…
There is an amazing group of African leaders in Bitcoin, among them:

@obi, @ihate1999, @ojomaochai, @actuallyCarlaKC, @ChimezieChuta, @Tongayi_, @AfricanBLC and so many others.

Any mistakes below are mine alone though!

“Bitcoin is cool and all, but governments and the system will never allow it.”

I’ve heard this so many times, and it’s wrong.

Here are 5 reasons why governments the world over will soon welcome #Bitcoin:
1/ Western governments are going broke.

“In every country and era, runaway deficits and skyrocketing debt have ended in economic stagnation or ruin.” @Avik

It’s only a matter of time before the Treasury buys recent history's best returning asset:

nationalaffairs.com/publications/d…
2/ A ban isn't possible.

Bitcoin is run across tens of thousands of computers, everywhere in the world.

Trying to ban Bitcoin is like trying to ban pollen.

Govts may try to control applications: from banking to payments. But Bitcoin will march on.

“Bitcoin already consumes as much energy as a mid-sized country - it will accelerate climate change and destroy the planet.”

Actually…

Bitcoin will be a major force for good in the fight against climate change.

Here are 5 reasons why: 🧵👇
Quick context:

I believe the threat of climate change is real and urgent. I helped pass a carbon tax in Canada and believe in climate action.

And I think Bitcoin is a crucial part of a greener future.

Here are the 5 reasons:
#1: Our civilization is needs lots more energy!

We need an energy abundance agenda: massive investments in low carbon infrastructure and we need to build it fast.

Bitcoin mining can spur massive investment in clean energy.
