📽️LIVE: SPLC President & CEO @MargaretlHuang testifies on the rise in violence against #HBCUs.

HBCUs are central to Black scholarship and the inclusion of Black voices in American dialogue.

We condemn the targeted violence and support the HBCU community. splcenter.org/news/2022/02/1…
Educational institutions, houses of worship & other community institutions have historically been safe spaces for all people – sanctuaries for communities to gather, share, learn, fellowship, and build a support network.

This is particularly true for communities of color.
The bomb threats against almost two dozen #HBCUs over the past two weeks have been deeply impactful, shaking a sense of security & safety.

Coinciding with the start of #BlackHistoryMonth, it's also reminiscent of the U.S's history of white supremacist attacks on Black churches.
One of the offenders reportedly claimed a connection to the Atomwaffen Division (AWD)2 – a terroristic, neo-Nazi organization our @Hatewatch team has been tracking over the past five years.

Read more about the hate group in our #ExtremistFile below.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/…
These criminal acts committed are deeply disturbing – and underscore the need for parents, educators & communities to be attuned to signs of radicalization.

Our #PERIL resources below can be used to begin addressing the threat of extremism among youth: splcenter.org/peril
At a time when states are passing laws restricting teaching about racism, it's clear that more needs to be done to teach young people the truth about American history – both good and bad.
Learning from the past will shape a better world for generations today and those to come.
If the perpetrators’ threats were designed to send a message – that even learning while Black is not safe – they clearly underestimated the strength of these very special centers of scholarship, whose very existence is rooted in resilience. splcenter.org/news/2022/02/0…
We are pleased that @TheJusticeDept, @DHSgov, and the @FBI have launched criminal investigations into this case –– But more must be done.

As the far-right expanded its network of hate online, it relied on a popular digital medium to get its message out: Podcasts.

In this four-part report, SPLC researchers @MeganSquire0 and @hannahgais detail podcasts' role in far-right mobilization: splcenter.org/techwatch
In Part 1, the researchers zeroed in on 18 different podcasts from 2005–2020.

These shows –– which featured 882 cast members on 4,046 different episodes –– revealed how extremist leaders worked together to build their movement into a political force.

For the extreme right, SPLC found that these 18 shows served as a recruitment tool, a venue for shaping their narrative around “Unite the Right,” and a place to build contacts internationally at a low cost.

🚨TODAY:

Following the torture & forced deportation of #Cameroonian asylum seekers under the Trump admin, SPLC joined allies @theCCR @ProjectSouth in filing FOIA requests for government records on abuses against Black immigrants.

More in our statement:splcenter.org/presscenter/fo…
The FOIAs request records of communication on the deportation of Cameroonian immigrants between 8/1/20 and 1/19/21.

Read the 2 FOIA requests here: splcenter.org/sites/default/…
During that period, the gov deported an unknown number of #Cameroonian & other African #asylumseekers:

Despite life-threatening situations in their home countries, the fact that many had pending immigration court proceedings & despite pleas from members of the Congress.

TW: Sexual abuse

Today #AshleyDiamond, a Black trans woman, celebrates her birthday from a men's prison where she has been sexually assaulted at least 16 times since Oct '19.

We've helped her request an emergency order for protection.

Our statement:bit.ly/3tiDRQ9
The motion filed asks that the #Georgia Dept of Corrections take immediate steps to:

🔴Protect Ashley from physical & sexual violence.
🔴Transfer her to a women’s facility.
🔴Provide medically necessary treatment for gender dysphoria.
🔴Protect her & witnesses from retaliation.
After a historic legal settlement over abusive conditions facing incarcerated trans people in GDC prisons 6 years ago, Ashley is once again trying to survive brutal, unrelenting abuse as a trans woman in GDC men's prisons.
