This is an old thread but relevant to the current situation.

It describes the mindset of the group occupying cities and blocking borders. It also defines the motives of those funding this nightmare.

While many believe this is a fringe movement, it’s not.

A large portion of rural residents and a significant number of urban residents have adopted this belief system and its values across Canada.

It’s called libertarianism: all restrictions should be removed & each individual makes their own choice based on personal responsibility.

This belief has been thoroughly adopted by The Liberty Coalition Canada among other organizations and ideologies. LCC has made removing Covid mandates one of its demands.

The vast majority of members are far right Christians.

Hundreds of churches and individual members have voiced their belief that evangelical Christians should NOT be subject to secular law and order. They believe they should be exempt from Covid mandates. Because gods law supersedes secular law. And who can question a deity?

What would be the point of rule of law if some special interest groups are exempt from following them? None. It’s anathema to democracy.

Rule of law applies to all citizens. Not just a portion of citizens. God’s law isn’t part of Canada’s legal system.

Clearly this group is asking for special status. There is no special status in Canadian law.

FN have rights in addition to our collective rights & freedoms, but that’s to preserve culture & traditional knowledge. But FN are still subject to Canadian laws just like everyone else.

FN don’t have freedoms to select the laws they want to follow and those they don’t, like some al a carte menu or law buffet.

However, there are FN who believe they should have this right.

These beliefs stem from extremist libertarian interpretations.

Extremist libertarianism beliefs and values are destroying democracy. And traditional indigenous culture for that matter.

When speaking of liberty and freedom, Canadians do not all share the same definition.

That is the problem.

Those who embrace democracy know there is no true freedom and liberty. I remember my grandmother explaining freedom when I was a indignant child who bucked the rules. We always have others to answer to, no matter how old we are.

Family friends, neighbours, community, government. And ultimately the global population. We cannot escape responsibility and accountability. We are interconnected. We are part of a collective system. The only people who have true freedom are those who live outside of society.

She was blunt and firm. I was mouthing off as petulant children do. Wishing I could make my own rules. Wanting to grow up so I didn’t have a boss.

She told me we all have a boss for the rest of our life. Being an adult wasn’t a pass to do what you want.

Choice accompanies freedom, but so does accountability.

We are free to choose our own path, but we are not free to shirk accountability.

You hit someone in anger and you’re going to either get hit back, arrested and charged with a crime or both.

Libertarians want the freedom to act without the consequences of accountability attached. They want mandates removed because that’s their choice. It’s irrelevant to them whether it creates a less safe environment for the rest of us. It’s irrelevant that it’s a minority demand.

It’s irrelevant that it’s a public health order & part of the rule of law.

They believe god gave them permission to make choices that supersede secular laws, because they are god’s chosen people. True believers.

Try reasoning with people holding that belief. It’s impossible.

You’re left with challenging a deity. Which being human, you’ve already lost the argument.

That’s why they won’t budge in their thinking and beliefs. They honestly believe they are exempt from secular laws that are contrary to god’s law.

Of course it’s a very human being that interprets god’s law. But they have been given special abilities to interpret the Bible that is considered without mistakes & is a manual for all humans to obey.

The premise is ridiculous and presents no option to negotiate or compromise.

But unless that libertarian belief is challenged and laws are created and used to refute the belief in superiority and special privilege of Dominionist Christians, Canadians will continue to have Christians and pastors asserting their “freedom” to choose which laws they follow.

So you can see why overthrowing the govt is central to their demands & why so many are voicing their willingness to die for this cause & why a few are abandoning family to fight for that freedom. The belief in god’s (their pastor’s) command to obey overrides familial bonds.

That’s nuts. But the far left is no different.

Human & civil rights to self determine have been taken to the extreme. No longer is an individual accountable to society’s norms & mores. Radicalized progressive left believe in freedom to determine their own truth is liberty.

And every other citizen is expected to honour and recognize that truth. Even if it’s not really truth, but just an opinion or ideological belief.

We have social Justice warriors who have determined democratic institutions are untrustworthy.

So they must take justice into their own hands. And do what they perceive is the correct and appropriate intervention.

Last time I checked, that’s the definition of mobbing. Not freedom or liberty.

How is it any different from the override of rule of law if a group of people decide the pace and efficacy of law enforcement is insufficient and they must step forward to get the job done?

It isn’t. It isn’t any different.

It’s the same abandonment of rule of law by failing to defer to the authorities who are responsible for enforcing the law. Vigilantism is a crime.

Ignoring the police and taking over their function in society is anarchy. Not freedom.

But try to tell an indignant self righteous progressive leftie that. They and a mob of their friends will intimidate you into submission or bring out the big guns; identity politics and banishment from the in group.

That’s where all the conflict in society originates.

Libertarianism.

Libertarianism is about power dynamics, not freedom.

It uses the premise of superiority to radicalize people to enforce their beliefs.

In another era that belief system was called fascism.

And if we don’t expose and remove it soon, democracy will die.
