Omicron is not "mild." It is less severe than delta, but hospitalizations and deaths continue to increase due to Omicron. Worldwide deaths have increased for the 6th week in a row @mvankerkhove
It's the 6th week in a row that we're seeing increasing deaths from COVID-19. In the last week alone ~75,000 people died. And we know that is an underestimate @mvankerkhove
75,000 people died from COVID last week. At the peak of this pandemic, at the highest week ever there were 110,000 deaths and that was considered to be the most awful week in the pandemic. We're at 75,000. It's not a whole long way from there @DrMikeRyan
Testing is a critical component to the COVID-19 strategy so it must be affordable, reliable & rapid. You need to know where the virus is. You need to know how the virus is changing so that the interventions can be adapted and tailored to where they are needed most @mvankerkhove
Testing is important b/c it allows for early treatment of people with underlying conditions that have a high risk of progressing to severe COVID. These include people that have cancer, lung disease, heart conditions, older than 65, etc @mvankerkhovecdc.gov/coronavirus/20…
The virus is evolving. Omicron has several sublineages BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2 & BA.3. We're seeing an increase in the sequences of BA.2, which is more transmissible than BA.1. @mvankerkhove
There are a significant number of people suffering from #LongCovid among the 409 million infected. This needs more attention b/c #LongCovid will be part of our future. There is no reason to suggest a difference in Long Covid among people infected w/Delta vs Omicron @mvankerkhove
If we get hit with another variant and we've abandoned all public health measures, it's going to be really hard to put anything back in place. This idea that we're going to abandon everything is a very premature concept in many countries right now @DrMikeRyan
Public health measures should be reduced in a step-by-step approach that looks at data, epidemiology & the health system and then SLOWLY come down the mountain step-by-step. You're much more likely to fall when you're coming down a mountain than when you're climbing @DrMikeRyan
There are many countries lifting public health mandates and adjusting to the virus slowly. For example lifting outdoor mask requirements, continuing remote work and investing in ventilation @mvankerkhove
The pandemic does not have an on/off button. This false dichotomy has damaged our ability to control spread. We know this virus better than any other virus in history. We have the tools to control this pandemic, but we may have to sustain a high level of vigilance w/masks
Before the 1940s millions of people died from pneumonia and wound infections because there were no antibiotics. The goal is to turn COVID-19 into a disease that we can manage @DrMikeRyan

🧵@WHO updates on the COVID-19 pandemic. In the last week we saw an 8% increases in cases detected with more than 11 million reported, despite a significant reduction of testing occurring worldwide @mvankerkhove
99.9% of sequences provided in the last 30 days are #Omicron. Among those ~75% are BA.2 & 25% BA.1. All of these are variants of concern. However, our ability to track Omicron is compromised because testing is reduced. You can't sequence those who you do not test! @mvankerkhove
COVID-19 vaccines remain incredibly effective at preventing severe disease and death, including against Omicron @mvankerkhove
Omicron is a deadly virus. 28-year-old James Perkinson from Greenbrier #Tennessee was hospitalized at Vanderbilt December 23, 2021 and recently weaned off ECMO. He contracted COVID two days before his scheduled vaccination #TheySurvivedCovid
28 y.o. James Perkinson from Greenbrier #Tennessee would have died from the Omicron variant without ECMO. "I have to pretty much start over again. Learn how to walk, move my arms, eat, drink, everything. I'm back at square one." #TheySurvivedCovid
28 y.o. James Perkinson from Greenbrier #Tennessee has a minimum 9 month recovery after nearly dying from the Omicron variant. Interviewed by @ReporterGoodman
COVID-19 damages the endothelium of blood vessels in the body, which promotes the formation of blood clots. 50% of pulmonary embolisms due to COVID are not associated with deep vein thrombosis. Dr. George Chrysant Interventional Cardiologist in Oklahoma City #TheySurvivedCovid
COVID-19 is a systemic disease, which means that it can affect any organ in the body. The virus may directly attack an organ or indirectly affect the organ by damage to the blood vessels supplying it.
COVID is a systemic disease
It attacks the
Heart ➡️myocarditis
Lungs ➡️pneumonia
Brain➡️ seizures
GI ➡️ diarrhea ➡️ renal failure
It forms blood CLOTS in vessels
Lungs➡️pulmonary embolism
Heart➡️heart attack
Brain➡️stroke
Kidney➡️ renal failure➡️dialysis
Leg artery➡️amputation
Omicron is a deadly virus. Former UFC star 41 y.o. Chris "The Crippler" Leben from San Diego CA is recovering from COVID after being on life support. He declined to talk about his vaccination status. This was his second battle with COVID #TheySurvivedCovid10news.com/news/local-new…
“I was ready to tap out, and the reason I didn’t tap is because of my child … If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had the fight to get through those days,” said Leben.
There is a disinformation campaign that young people are not affected by COVID-19 and that #Omicron is mild. These are both incorrect. Vaccination against COVID-19 protects against severe disease.
44 y.o. Tom Urey from Townville Pennsylvania died from COVID in December 2021. His wife, Mandy, 32, died 4 weeks later. #SoulsLostToCovid
“There are days I’d like to sit and cry and drown,” said grandma, “but I have two little boys to raise.... People should get vaccinated.... it could prevent you from getting it so bad that you wind up on a ventilator and possibly losing your life.”
There's no doubt that cases of COVID are decreasing, which is great! However to truly capture the seriousness of the current surge we must end the reclassification of COVID-19 hospitalizations based upon testing positive. I applaud this hospital system for at least providing an *
You should still be counted as a COVID-19 hospitalization after you test negative
