🧵I want to take a moment to share my thoughts on something that I know has been top of mind for everyone in recent weeks. Weekends are a time that we all look forward to.
They’re a time to spend with family and friends & I know that this precious time has been ruined for the last 3 weekends by the ongoing unruly & disruptive convoy protests. Just like you, I am tired of it. Edmontonians deserve to enjoy their weekend & should feel safe doing so.
I hear your frustrations because I also feel them. I have heard from local business owners who are facing harassment when they ask people to put on their masks.
I have heard that some local business owners have closed their businesses forcing them to lose revenue during these protests because they feel it's unsafe to operate. I have heard from young families and seniors who live downtown who are exhausted by constant honking.
I have heard about people being harassed while enjoying a walk in their neighbourhood because they chose to wear a mask and do their part to keep the community safe. This is not okay and Edmontonians deserve better.
While I respect the right to peaceful protests, it is clear that these convoys are not that.
I value and appreciate the efforts of the Edmonton Police Service ensuring the physical safety of Edmontonians. But safety does not just include safety from physical violence.
It also includes harassment in the form of abusive language, refusal to follow heath guidelines and people being abusive towards staff as well as excessive noise frustrating those living in downtown and surrounding communities.
Edmontonians expect enforcement to ensure that they can live free of harassment, intimidation, excessive noise and unruly behaviour during these protests.
I know that living through the pandemic has been difficult for everyone. But we are Edmontonians. We have shown up for each other and lifted each other up during these trying times.
I know that you will continue to do that again this weekend for your friends and neighbours. We will get through this together.
311 will continue to receive bylaw service requests from Edmontonians through all channels — the Call Centre, the web form and the 311 App. Should Edmontonians wish to report non-criminal matters related to their safety, they can also contact 311 through the Call Centre.
New call codes have been added to track noise/nuisance-related calls related to the protests (eg. harassment for wearing masks, revving engines, etc.). Every Edmontonian deserves peace this weekend, and always. Do not hesitate to call 311 if you require support. Stay safe, #YEG.

🧵 I am thrilled that the federal government has met our needs for transit operating shortfall funding, but in order to retain this offer, we need the province to step up too. #YEG#YEGtransit
I am passionate about Edmonton transit and I know how life-changing accessible, affordable and functioning transit can be. Provincial funding would help increase ridership, maintain service levels and create jobs here in our city - this is a reasonable ask. #YEG#YEGtransit
I sincerely hope the province will join the federal government in supporting our city as we improve our transit systems and economically recover from COVID-19. If they do not meet this ask, we will lose funding from our federal partners. #YEG#YEGtransit
🧵I know that the past few years have been difficult and last night’s announcement caused mixed emotions for Edmontonians. While I am disappointed by the changes the GoA announced yesterday without consulting us, I am pleased to see #yegcc taking a united front to keep us safe.
Municipalities are empowered to implement safety measures that are specifically designed to protect their residents. The previous and current #YEGcc have both already exercised this right, and we will continue to explore all options.
To the HCWs, teachers, parents, elderly and immunocompromised folks who have reached out to express their fears and anxieties - we see you, we hear you, and we want you, and all Edmontonians, to feel safe in this city.
🧵As Mayors of the two cities that straddle Member of Parliament Michael Cooper’s riding, Mayor @CathyHeron and I are troubled by a photo of MP Cooper that is being circulated with an upside down Canadian flag with a hateful symbol of a swastika on it.
This type of symbolism is never okay, but it is even more troubling as we just marked the anniversary of the Holocaust, and today, we remember the victims who lost their lives in the hate-based Quebec City Mosque attack five years ago.
We want the rest of the country to know that MP Cooper’s presence at this rally in no way reflects the values of Edmontonians and St. Albertans. Our communities are diverse, inclusive and welcoming—hate has absolutely no place here.
🧵 It has been 5 years since a gunman entered the Quebec City Mosque. Six Muslims lost their lives and others were injured. Today, we observe the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.
I remember this dark day in our history. I was in Ottawa working as a federal minister, and I will never forget the despair, fear and trauma that my Muslim friends and colleagues were feeling. Canada would never be the same again.
In honour of the memory of the victims, in recognition of those who selflessly and courageously put themselves in harm’s way to protect others, and in solidarity with the survivors, I am participating in @nccm’s Green Square campaign today.
🧵I have spent a large portion of my time as Mayor building relationships with our provincial and federal government partners. I believe that collaboration is how we move forward in our city, and I am grateful for the meaningful conversations we have had thus far.
I have met with the Premier and many ministers to highlight what our city needs financially to succeed, to grow our economy, create jobs and support one another as we emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever.
🏠My top priority is supporting and protect our city’s unhoused population. We have asked Premier Kenney to fund the capital construction of 552 supportive housing units that are required in the @CityofEdmonton’s plan to end houselessness.
🧵 Today, on #HolocaustRemembranceDay, we remember the many Jewish peoples who lost their lives to violent Antisemitism and honour the survivors who are still with us.
The Holocaust was the systematic persecution and murder of over six million Jews by the Nazi regime, its allies and collaborators. Many Jews still experience generational trauma as a result of this genocide, and we must reconcile with this.
I condemn Antisemitism in all of its sinister forms and stand in solidarity with #YEG's Jewish community as they mourn, remember, reflect and heal. We must continue to take action to end hate-based violence each and every day.
