Look at the photo carefully. The face of a Polish girl dressed in the camp’s striped uniform is symbolic of Nazi policy towards children whose lives were considered unnecessary.

The German Generalplan Ost was created on the basis of the assumption that  a “living space” (“Lebensraum”) in the territories of Central and Eastern Europe was necessary for Nazi Germany’s development.

In practice, this meant the displacement of the native Polish population from those areas where German and (secondly) Ukrainian settlers had been introduced. In line with Heinrich Himmler’s intentions, the first resettlement took place in the Zamość region.

On this #HolocaustRemembranceDay please know that ‘border security’ means pushing refugees back to harm and death, & putting them in detention camps where they are called by their ‘alien number’ rather than their names. #NeverAgainIsNow
Asylum was created after the holocaust, to ensure that people fleeing persecution had the right to cross borders and ask for protection. By closing our borders to refugees, we dishonor the memories of those killed in concentration camps after being turned away from our borders
Every time you believe or ignore hateful anti-immigrant, anti-LGBTQ, and anti-Black/Indigenous rhetoric, we are one step closer to fascism that will result in death and exclusion of these vilified groups. This isn’t hyperbole, we can already see increased violence fueled by hate

Today is the international holocaust remembrance day. Exactly today 78 years ago my grandmother (Sarah) and grandfather (Albert) were freed from Auschwitz, where they lost their parents, aunts, uncles, 3 sisters and an infant child, my uncle Wolf. All murdered by the Nazis /1
When my father was born 5 years later, my grandparents named him Heinrich Wolf so that his murdered brother would be commemorated in his own name. My father died in 2016 & when my son Noam was born we decided to continue this tradition & give him the second name Wolf as well. /2
I think remembering the holocaust is important for all mankind, it needs to be a lesson for all of us about fascism, cruelty, de-humanisation and what it means to be human. I always use this day to tell my students about my family during the holocaust. Hoping it has an effect /3

Adolf Eichmann would perhaps never have been captured if it weren't for the man in this grainy photograph, a blind refugee named Lothar Hermann.
Hermann was born in Germany to a Jewish father and Christian mother & sent to Dachau in '35
for anti-Nazi activities. Photo of Lothar Hermann reprinted in the Israeli newspaper HArgentinian Mercedes Benz identification card for "Rica
He was violently beaten by the Gestapo and would later go blind as a result of his treatment there. He survived Dachau and was able to flee Germany following Kristallnacht, heading to Argentina.
In the 1950s, his daughter Sylvia began dating someone named Klaus Eichmann.
Though Adolf Eichmann, one of the most sought-after Nazi war criminals, was living in hiding under the alias "Ricardo Klement", his son – a raging anti-Semite who openly lamented that the Nazis hadn’t succeeded in murdering all of the Jews – used his father's actual last name.

I was 15 when I learned my family (Catholic Croatian Yugoslavians) had survived Dachau, the longest running concentration camp in Nazi Germany. 🧵
I was watching Schindler's List with my grandfather Franjo Penic, and at some point I looked over to see him weeping and shaking. I was stunned. Here's the stoic patriarch of the family whom I'd never known to show any emotion but patient neutrality or lighthearted joviality.
It never occurred to me that a Holocaust story about Jews in Germany would have anything to do with my Catholic Yugoslav family. (I realize I was probably taught in school about Nazi persecution of Slavs during WWII but I dunno, somehow it didn't sink in).

#HolocaustRemembranceDay

My grandmother Rosa was born in 1930 in Lyon, France.
She had just turned 10 years old when the Nazis invaded, and the anti-semitic Vichy government was installed in southern France.
She never told me about what school was like-
Whether she had to wear a yellow star-
Whether she was afraid-
Whether she knew that parents (not born in France) were at risk-
She never told me about the time the French milice snuck into the back of the synagogue with hand grenades on a Friday night. They were poised to throw them at unsuspecting crowd at the very moment the congregation all turned to the back door to 'welcome the Sabbath bride.'

#HolocaustRemembranceDay I would like to remember the Jews of Brest, Belarus also known as “Briskers”. Out of around 26,000 Jews, only around 20 are thought to have survived.
The Jewish presence of the town has been almost completely erased, despite us being a majority of the population up until the Holocaust.
Jews who were not murdered upon the invasion were put into the Brest ghetto. soon after that a majority were deported to Bronna Gora, a secluded forest, where they would be murdered and thrown into mass graves.

In the 1930s, the Jewish population in Europe was almost 10 million.

By 1945, 60% had been murdered, decimating communities that had lived there for centuries.

This is the story of the #Holocaust.

#InternationalHolocaustRemembranceDay
Jewish communities in Poland date back at least 1,000 years.

3.5 million Jews lived in Poland before the war.

Over 3 million were murdered by the Nazis.

Today, only a few thousands remain.
The first Jews arrived in Ukraine in the 4th century BC.

1.5 million were murdered during the Holocaust.

Many were killed at the hands of Einsatzgruppen, or "Death Squads".

This includes the Babi Yar massacre, killing 35,000 and decimating Kiev's Jewish community.

In 1215, spurred by a growing concern that good Christians might accidentally "mingle" w/ Jews & Muslims (which could be ruinous!), the 4th Lateran Council decreed that Jews & Muslims living in Christian provinces must be made distinguishable in public "by a difference of dress"
In 1217, England became the first nation to pass a corresponding law: England's Jewish population was to wear a white badge shaped like the two tablets Moses carried down from Mt. Sinai.
The badge colour was changed to yellow in 1275, under Edward I.

Though it is extremely difficult to know that there are those who have spent their life trying to deny the Holocaust ever happened (and some at pretty high levels of academia), it is encouraging to also know that we can fight those lies by teaching our children.
When my oldest son is old enough, he will know that he took a picture with Holocaust survivor Irving Roth. He will know what the Shoah was, and most importantly, he will know we are never too far from it. Never again for us as gentile allies is an active thing.
It’s not just being nice. It’s defending our Jewish brothers and sisters against evil. It’s speaking up when we hear lies being told. It’s sticking out neck out even when it’s literally the most unpopular thing to do, and it often is.

🧵 Today, on #HolocaustRemembranceDay, we remember the many Jewish peoples who lost their lives to violent Antisemitism and honour the survivors who are still with us.
The Holocaust was the systematic persecution and murder of over six million Jews by the Nazi regime, its allies and collaborators. Many Jews still experience generational trauma as a result of this genocide, and we must reconcile with this.
I condemn Antisemitism in all of its sinister forms and stand in solidarity with #YEG's Jewish community as they mourn, remember, reflect and heal. We must continue to take action to end hate-based violence each and every day.
