Ukraine used to be part of soviet republic, (in other words) it was part of Russia back when Russia was still the USSR. In the 90s the USSR splited up and Ukraine essentially became an independent state.
Russia has been trying to take two regions in eastern Ukraine where they share a border: Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia took a peninsula in southern ukraine called Crimea in around 2014. since late 2021 and early 2022 Russia has been preparing for an invasion of ukraine.
this was evident due to hundreds of thousands of troops on the border along with tanks, missiles, medical supplies, ETC. the world repeatedly questioned Russia about this, and they denied their intention to invade, saying that they were "conducting drills."
Ukraine tried joining NATO
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is America's best chance against destroying a Super power like Russia, Ukraine Joining NATO gives America an edge over Ruasia
few days ago, there was a shelling at a local kindergarten along with an explosion on a pipeline in disputed territory. Russia likely did this themselves, why? to gain a "motive" to invade ukraine. if they blow up one of their own pipelines and attack their own schools
then they can say that ukraine did it and Putin (the leader of Russia) can therefore gain more support within the country to invade. and today, they started bombing the major cities of Ukraine including Kyiv (the capital) and Kharkov.
I hope this helps, but please research more on it. Don't take my word as the most credible.
