@INakamitsu@OPCW In her message, the High Representative underscored that #ChemicalWeapons use in Syria, Malaysia, Iraq, the UK and Russia had threatened the norms embedded in the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and profoundly damaged the disarmament and non-proliferation efforts.
@INakamitsu@OPCW She also highlighted that the UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres had repeatedly stressed that the use of chemical weapons anywhere by anyone and under any circumstances would be unacceptable and had urged the international community to act.
@INakamitsu@OPCW The High Representative touched on the close cooperation between @UN and @OPCW exemplified by the UN Investigation into the Allegation of the Use of #ChemicalWeapons in Syria, so-called “Sellström Investigation,” the OPCW-UN Joint Mission and the Joint Investigative Mechanism.
@INakamitsu@OPCW In closing, she also emphasized the final objective is not the identification of those responsible for the use of chemical weapons but a step beyond that, wherein those who are responsible for the use of chemical weapons are held accountable.

On 8 and 9 February, Botswana hosted a workshop on its 1540 national implementation action plan (NAP) for implementing the key provisions of #UNSCR1540, in partnership with @UN_Disarmament and the #1540Committee, with the support of the US and the EU. 👉 bit.ly/3hoBk2r

On the first day, Botswanan government detailed the status of implementation of resolution 1540 in the country, followed by a discussion among workshop participants, comprised of representatives from key national ministries and agencies, about possible new national measures.
