Chilling update from Mariupol's deputy mayor Sergey Orlov on CNN. He spoke of 26h uninterrupted shelling by all types of weaponry. The city is surrounded by Russian forces on ALL sides. For 1.5 days there is no heating, electricity, water. He warns of a humanitarian crisis. /1
When asked how many civilians were killed, Orlov said that it remains unclear because "We cannot collect and count all the dead bodies". Minimum 200 are reported dead.
The army and national guard still defend Mariupol but are awaiting 🇺🇦 military support. /2
Orlov also said that he lost contact with his own parents and relatives (left bank of the city) and that there is very limited cellphone coverage in the city.
When asked what his message to the world is, he said All should know that 🇺🇦 are fighting for freedom, for Europe /3
I visited Mariupol for the last time about 1 year ago, to portray local activists. There, I met inspiring people from civil society, artists, environmental activists turned city councilors. Here are some of their faces. For this summer, I was planning a conference in M. /end
Update from the southern front: heavy fighting inside of Kherson. Unlike Russian media reports, the city has not fallen. Fighting also near Mykolaiv.
VERY intensive shelling of Mariupol (Donetsk Oblast). Mayor there reports a lot of wounded civilians #Ukraine map from @nytimes
The map above is slightly outdated. Russian forces are already in different areas of Zaporizhia. Waiting for an updated map. What is more recent is information of the RU movements near Kyiv, where we see the first attempts to cut off the resistance in Chernihiv and Sumy from Kyiv
President Zelenskyy just addressed the European parliament (an earlier speech was to HIS people). Here comes a short summary of what stood out to me 🧵
Zelenskyy opened by saying that "I cannot say good morning, good afternoon, or good evening anymore". Because every day for some people here is the last.
He says citizens are defending their country and pay the ultimate price. /2
Zelenskyy said just this morning two cruise missiles hit the European city of Kharkiv, where more than 20 universities are there, the city with the highest number of universities. The missile hit Europe's largest square, the Freedom Square, where dozens were killed. /3
President Zelenskyy just addressed the European parliament. Here is my short summary of his speech:
President Zelenskyy said the Russian shelling of Kharkiv, constitutes war crimes and added that “They are using terror trying to break us.” #Ukraine /1
The 🇺🇦 president calls Russia a "terrorist state" and urges all states to respond to these "criminal tactics" and hold Russia accountable. /2
Zelenskyy said that Kharkiv and Kyiv remain the most important targets and said that Kyiv, as the heart of the state, will be defended at all cost. He also announced that Kyiv is now governed by a military administration announced but Klitschko remains mayor. /3
/2 nv.ua/ukraine/events…
Quick update from Luhansk Oblast, where fighting rages on. 🇺🇦 forces have taken a defensive position in Sieverodonetsk, the regional capital. Friends and family tell me that there is A LOT of soldiers and equipment there and today the city experienced heavy shelling /1
The city was shelled today and one civilian was killed, two others wounded, according to the head of the regional administration. Meanwhile, the Russian forces are advancing from the south and east and possibly from the north. /2 novosti.dn.ua/news/321188-ob…
Yesterday, locals in Svatove, in northern Luhansk, told me that 🇷🇺 advance forces had briefly entered the city, where at this point no Ukrainian forces were positioned. They literally had lunch in a local cafeteria and were told by locals that they are NOT welcome in the city. /3
The hopes for the 🇺🇦-🇷🇺 talks today were low. It seems this was more a preliminary talk to identify topics for further talks. Advisor to Zelenskyy Podoliak said as much in a short briefing and added that talks might resume “in the near future”. pravda.com.ua/news/2022/02/2…
Let’s be clear: there are certain topics to talk about, such as local ceasefires or humanitarian corridors, evacuation of I hired or killed soldiers etc. But chances for broader ceasefire are very low, given Putin’s maximalist goals (neutrality & demilitarization of 🇺🇦) and…
the fact that the majority of Russian invasion forces have not yet entered combat. So, Putin still has a lot of fire power (escalation dominance) before he agrees to any substantial talks…
