With no action from US Congress to pass a privacy bill anytime soon, we see more calls for the @FTC to fill the void.
While the FTC can address things like online data practices in certain circumstances, it is limited in what it can do to ensure Americans' privacy. (1/7)
Why is that?
1. The FTC is only as strong as Congress allows it to be (Congress determines its funding). 2. The FTC was created to tackle industrial giants that dominated the US economy over a century ago, and the laws haven't been updated for today's digital world. (2/7)
While it's possible for the FTC to issue regulations on its own, the process is slow and complicated. Also, the FTC's consumer protection powers apply to "unfair" and "deceptive" practices, meaning companies that disclose them in complex T&Cs are often let off the hook. (3/7)

SwissCovid uses the #DP3T protocol, which keeps all sensitive data stored locally on the users' device. Overall, the protocol is not too bad as we have explained here: protonmail.com/blog/privacy-c… However, it doesn't mitigate the privacy issues inherent to Android and Google. 3/8
