2/ 42 African states negotiated and voted to adopt the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2017:

🧵1/ The nuclear threat is growing, and it is very normal that it creates feelings of worry and anxiety in a lot of people. We asked a psychologist in our network to help out with some practical tips, we hope these will help. #nuclearban

2/ Try to remind yourselves of key facts and then aim to "end" the thought there so that catastrophic thoughts, imagination, and feelings of anxiety do not get too much space in your thoughts.

3/ It can help to remember to focus on your breathing for a while if you suddenly feel anxious.

🧵1/ Today Belarus is holding a referendum to revoke its nuclear-weapon-free status. Nuclear weapons are weapons of mass destruction and are illegal under international law. ICAN condemns any moves away from nuclear-weapon-free pledges. icanw.org/belarus_and_nu…

2/The referendum will not represent the will of the people. Lukashenko's reckless behavior of is threatening the lives of the people of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and all neighboring countries. Nuclear weapons will not keep anybody safe and a nuclear escalation can't be contained.

3/ The referendum shows that as long as nuclear weapons exist, so does their threat of use . Nuclear war cannot be contained and has to be avoided under all circumstances. International law must be respected, nuclear weapons must be eliminated. icanw.org/report_no_plac…

2/ Russia has the world's largest nuclear arsenal, with nearly 6,000 total nuclear warheads, over 1,500 of which are deployed. Russia can launch its warheads from missiles, airplanes, and submarines. fas.org/issues/nuclear…
