This morning, Putin threatened to use nuclear weapons. What does that actually mean? (Thread🧵)
kremlin.ru/events/preside…
1) Flash. An intense Tsunami of light, the brightest and blinding light anyone has ever seen.
2) Fireball. A flaming ball of gas hotter than the sun appears and grows to a fireball km in width. Within seconds anyone and anything within this ball is gone, evaporated. In Hiroshima, the only thing left were people’s shadows, burnt forever into stone. icanw.org/hiroshima_and_…
3) Firestorms. Mass fires will likely form intensifying deaths, injuries and damage caused by the blast. icanw.org/catastrophic_h…
4) Blast. A huge shockwave travelling hundreds of kilometres per hour causes damage, killing people close to ground zero, and causing widespread injuries even further away. Buildings are damaged, and glass is shattered for kilometres.
icanw.org/catastrophic_h…
5) Radiation: immediate. Thermal radiation (heat) is so intense that almost everything close to ground zero is vaporised. In the short term, the extreme heat causes severe burns and ignites fires over a large area, which coalesce into a giant firestorm. icanw.org/hibakusha
6) Radiation: long-term. In the long run, the ionising radiation either kills or sickens those exposed, even generations later, and contaminates the environment for many, many years to come. icanw.org/catastrophic_h…
7) Response capacity. As @ICRC and medical professionals have warned for decades, the humanitarian catastrophe of a nuclear bomb will be impossible for any health care system to deal with. The world cannot respond to the consequences of nuclear weapon use.
icanw.org/report_no_plac…
8) We must prevent what cannot be cured. As @BeaFihn wrote today in @politico, we need diplomatic action to uphold international law. We need #nuclearban.

🧵1/ Today Belarus is holding a referendum to revoke its nuclear-weapon-free status. Nuclear weapons are weapons of mass destruction and are illegal under international law. ICAN condemns any moves away from nuclear-weapon-free pledges. icanw.org/belarus_and_nu…
2/The referendum will not represent the will of the people. Lukashenko's reckless behavior of is threatening the lives of the people of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and all neighboring countries. Nuclear weapons will not keep anybody safe and a nuclear escalation can't be contained.
3/ The referendum shows that as long as nuclear weapons exist, so does their threat of use . Nuclear war cannot be contained and has to be avoided under all circumstances. International law must be respected, nuclear weapons must be eliminated. icanw.org/report_no_plac…

Yesterday we explained what nuclear weapons do when they are used. We know that this is a risk because of Putin's explicit nuclear threats and Russia's grotesque nuclear arsenal. Here are some facts about Russian nuclear weapons near Ukraine. (Thread🧵) #nuclearban Image
2/ Russia has the world's largest nuclear arsenal, with nearly 6,000 total nuclear warheads, over 1,500 of which are deployed. Russia can launch its warheads from missiles, airplanes, and submarines. fas.org/issues/nuclear…
3/ But how many of these weapons are relevant for a conflict in Ukraine? Over 1,000 Russian nuclear warheads can be launched from short-range ground-based missiles or dropped from planes. tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.108…

1/ Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a direct violation of international law and puts civilians at incredible risk.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and urge the international community to pressure Russia to participate in conversation and diplomacy. #nuclearban Image
2/ Putin’s threat this morning to retaliate with "consequences unprecedented in history" proves that the deployment of nuclear weapons is always possible and escalating.
kremlin.ru/events/preside…
3/ This conflict is already harming civilians. Adding mass murder threats with nuclear weapons does nothing to protect people. The only thing NWs do in this situation is elevate the risk of a massive humanitarian catastrophe no one can respond to:

📢BREAKING

🧵1/ The German🇩🇪 Coalition government has just released its draft coalition government agreement in which it would commit to observing the first meeting of states parties of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. #nuclearban #ampel #koalitionsvertrag
2/By attending as observers, 🇩🇪 would be taking a first step in following the will of the German people. Recent polls say that the vast majority of voters across democratic parties (83%) support the TPNW and oppose acquisition of nuclear capable aircraft. #nuclearban
3/ This news follows last month’s decision by Norway🇳🇴 to participate at the first MSP and firmly indicates that there should be no conflict with the TPNW for Nato member states. More are sure to follow. #TPNW1MSP
