'Cheaper and greener' water cremations could soon get the green light in Scotland for the first time
The process, also referred to as aquamation, sees the body put into a stainless steel vessel and surrounded by a solution of about 95 per cent water and five per cent potassium hydroxide.
The process helps speed up the natural decomposition of the corpse, and after three to four hours, only bones remain, which can then be ground into a powder and given to the family to keep or scatter. #cremation
When it was compared with traditional #cremation, it cut the amount of harmful carbon dioxide by up to 90%!
In fact, this might not be the first time you've heard of a water cremation.
Interest in water cremations rose after Archbishop @TheDesmondTutu choose it for his send off, after his death on Boxing Day last year.
The @scotgov has said it is now looking into passing regulations that would allow water cremation 'as soon as is practicable'.
Scottish Water has already approved waste liquid from water cremation to be discharged into the sewer network where capacity exists.
A spokesperson for the #ScottishGovernment said new methods for the disposal of bodies can be passed under the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act of 2016 and a decision on its introduction would include a 'full public consultation'.
The process in total costs between £600 and £1,000- around the same as a traditional cremation, according to Resomation Ltd (@watercremation) which is seeking to provide the service in the UK.
But experts say as more people become interested in 'greener goodbyes', it could become cheaper than a conventional cremation 💴
Would you be interested in a water cremation if it was cheaper, and more environmentally friendly? #ClimateCrisis
