Jacqueline Suchite Rivas thought she knew what abuse looked like. When her ex-husband hit her, that was abuse. When he pointed a gun at her and threatened her life, that was abuse.

But the name-calling, the jealousy, the isolation? That was just life.

While they were dating, he isolated her from her friends, telling her she only needed him. After they married, he ran up their credit without telling her. When she complained about his cruelty, he would tell her to lighten up.

Coercive control is the term for this form of abuse, and it can be an early indicator of relationships that will escalate into physical violence, and even homicide, according to a growing body of research. But many people don’t recognize it as abuse.
tgam.ca/3i5Goc9
In Canada, researchers who looked at femicides from 2015 to 2019 found controlling behaviours such as stalking, intimidation, isolation and threats were frequent. But those patterns are often recognized only in hindsight, after violence turns lethal.
tgam.ca/3i5Goc9
On average, a woman is killed by an intimate partner every six days in Canada. Zoom out to include attempted murders and that stat becomes one almost every other day.
tgam.ca/3i5Goc9
Some researchers say that criminalization is the way to crack down on coercive control. But others are leery about looking for solutions in a criminal justice system that disproportionately punishes Indigenous and racialized people.
tgam.ca/3i5Goc9
What both sides agree on is that this form of violence needs to be much better understood; not just by the healthcare, education and justice systems, but also by the general public. It's a life or death issue.

The Globe and Mail set out to analyze this violence and the gaps in the system that have enabled it.

From Helsinki to the Northwest Territories, a global pond hockey tournament is aiming to raise money and awareness of the fight against climate change.
tgam.ca/36hlV1l
It all started while playing shinny at an outdoor rink in Helsinki. The players used to discuss how climate change was shortening the hockey season. They remembered longer, colder winters from their childhoods – it seemed obvious that winter was changing.
tgam.ca/36hlV1l
They started wondering how hockey players could help fight climate change. The result emerged in 2015, when they held the first Save Pond Hockey tournament in Helsinki, aiming to make some noise about climate issues.

Eighteen months into the pandemic, Patricia Nogueira decided she’d had enough of working at a daycare centre. 🧵

tgam.ca/3i0Cmlo
🟣 She was tired of straining to communicate with children through a mask and face shield, worried about the germs her unvaccinated charges might be bringing in, and too exhausted to muster the positive, everything-is-going-to-be-okay attitude she knew parents expected of her.
🟣 While primary and secondary school teachers were being prioritized for vaccinations, daycare employees like her were being ignored. “It felt like I was worth nothing,” she says.

Ukraine’s defence minister has accused Russian forces of killing more civilians than soldiers, as new attacks struck a psychiatric facility and western airfields early Friday morning.

tgam.ca/3HZOM7D
Among the targets was a psychiatric residential facility about 80 kilometres from Kharkiv region, leaving the Oskil psychoneurological residential institution “uninhabitable.”

tgam.ca/3HZOM7D
At the time of the attack, 330 people were in the facility.

No injuries were immediately reported, because staff had brought patients into a shelter after an air alert sounded a warning prior to the attack.
