#Thread with details on today's #SSLV test & more:

Clearing the decks for the first flight of #SSLV, @isro today successfully carried out the ground testing of the newly developed solid booster stage (SS1) at SHAR. 1/n
The test happened at around 12.05pm. “This is the last test before the flight (developmental flight),” S Unnikrishnan Nair, director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), which is developing the SSLV, told me. 2/n
@isro will now schedule the first developmental flight which will put into orbit #EOS2 or #Microsat. While an official date for the developmental flight is yet to be arrived at, multiple scientists say it is expected to happen in the first half of this year. 3/n
A January review document from @isro reads: “The first developmental flight of the SSLV, the SSLV-D1, is scheduled to launch the EOS-2, an earth observation satellite in the first quarter of 2022.” 4/n
According to Isro, all the propulsion parameters during the test are found satisfactory and “closely matching with the predictions”. 5/n
SS1 is a 3-segmented solid propulsion stage with many new tech & innovative processes including bond-free joint between segments, high power electro mechanical actuator with digital control electronics, optimised ignitor & simultaneous propellant casting of all segments. 6/n
All these successfully validated in ground test. Monday’s success, @isro says, has given confidence to proceed with 1st developmental flight (SSLV-D1). “...The remaining stages have successfully undergone necessary ground tests & are ready for integration,” Isro. says. 7/n
Earlier, Isro had completed the SSLV Payload Fairing (SPLF) functional qualification test successfully and other testing activities are in progress. 8/n
I had reported that Isro will carry out this test this week while other crucial tests relating to the reusable launch vehicle technology demonstrator #RLVLEX and #Chandrayaan3 are also scheduled in the coming weeks. 9/n
Nair further added that once proven, each SSLV can be integrated and launched within 10 days. “That’s the beauty of an all-solid stage launch vehicle,” he said. 10/n
Designed to meet launch demand requirements in a cost-effective manner, SSLV is a three-stage all-solid vehicle with a capability to launch up to 500kg satellite mass into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). 11/n
According to VSSC, the SSLV is a three-stage launch vehicle configured with three solid propulsion stages and a liquid propulsion-based Velocity Trimming Module (VTM) as a terminal stage. 12/n
“SSLV is 2m in diameter & 34m in length with a lift off weight of around 120 tonnes. It can launch around 500kg sats in a 500km planar orbit. Key features: Low cost, low turn-around time, can accommodate multiple sats, launch on demand, min infra requirements,” VSSC adds. n/n

#space #updates #breaking:

There are some key developments unravelling related to some important missions/projects by @isro in the coming weeks. I'll soon be putting out something on #Chandrayaan3 #RLVLEX (reusable launch vehicle landing experiment) & #SSLV.

#Thread 1/n
The Indian Space Research Organisation (@isro), which has already completed its first successful launch this year, is getting busy with a slew of key tests pertaining to three important missions/projects in the coming weeks, aside from a launch mission. 2/n
While the #PSLV mission is scheduled to launch EOS-6 or #Oceansat3 in the early part of April, important tests under the #SSLV and #RLV programmes have been lined up in the weeks preceding and following that. A #Chandrayaan3 landing test too is scheduled in March. 3/n

#JUSTIN | Senior @isro scientist S Unnikrishnan Nair has taken charge as the director of #VSSC. Nair will continue to also hold the position of director, #HSFC (Human Space Flight Centre) that is spearheading the #Gaganyaan programme. 1/n
He has B.Tech in mechanical engineering from Kerala University, ME in Aerospace engg from @iiscbangalore, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from @iitmadras. 2/n
“Some missions will be taken up on priority. SSLV will come in April, Gaganyaan test vehicle missions will be this year, and we are looking at #chandrayaan3. These are immediate goals. We'll continue with overall Gaganyaan activities and other projects," Nair told me. 3/n

More #Space Updates: @isro , which has a packed 2022 has made considerable progress on #Chandrayaan3. With many related hardware and special tests successfully completed, the team is moving closer to integrated testing. Launch targeted this year. Maybe August. #Thread
@isro chairman S Somanath told me late last month: “Chandrayaan-3 has been going through a series of reviews, improvements, and strengthening. Some of these are based on the issues we’ve seen earlier....
...But the issues we’ve learnt so far may not be the only ones. The questions are many and we need to foresee a lot of them which may further require corrections. The hardware is under realisation too.”

#JUSTIN | Indian Institute of Science @iiscbangalore says it has installed and commissioned Param Pravega, one of the most powerful supercomputers in the country, and the largest in an Indian academic institution as part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). 1/n
The system, which is expected to power diverse research and educational pursuits, has a total supercomputing capacity of 3.3 petaflops (1 petaflop equals a quadrillion or 1,015 operations per second). 2/n
It has been designed by the @cdacindia. A majority of the components used have been manufactured and assembled within India, along with an indigenous software stack developed by C-DAC, a statement issued by IISc reads.

Two #Gaganyaan crew abort tests & #Aditya top priority this yr. @isro will look to launch a relay sat too. Dept of Space, which got Rs 13.7k-cr in Budget has outcome targets for sat launches: 5 PSLV, 2 GSLV, 2 SSLV. #Thread

Story: toi.in/VHeJFZ48/a24gj
@isro working towards carrying out at least 2 test missions to establish crew abort and escape systems using the specially designed test vehicle this yr; 1st uncrewed mission expected early next year. Isro will also look to launch the 1st relay satellites for the mission
Somanath on special test vehicle: “Whenever a new agency develops a human-rated space capability, they go through various tests for building such capability. Before the human-rated vehicle flies we have to fly the critical aspects of this techn in a low-cost option..."

Scientists from SAC and PRL recently demonstrated quantum entanglement based real time Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over 300m atmospheric channel along with quantum-secure text, image transmission and quantum-assisted two-way video calling. @isro
The demonstration was conducted at SAC between 2 buildings 300m apart. This experiment & demonstration were repeated over several nights for repeatability and robustness of indigenously developed QKD system that can seamlessly generate, utilise secure keys for various apps.
@isro: Various images were encrypted using a generated quantum key and transmitted over a classical channel from one building to another building separated by 300m and decrypted at the receiving terminal in real time.
