No Pentagon background briefing today about the war in Ukraine as @SecDef and his senior staff are traveling.

They did just release this update, though:

@SecDef "This is Day 23 of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Russians remain largely stalled across the country."

"Near Kyiv, we still observe Russian forces have not made significant advances toward the city in the north/north west. And to the east of Kyiv, we have observed no movement of Russian forces."

"They remain approximately 30 KM to the east. As you have seen, they are facing heavy resistance from the Ukrainians."

"Chernihiv remains isolated, but Ukrainians are defending the city. And in the vicinity of Kharkiv, Russian forces appear to have made no apparent progress on the ground. "

"Near Mykolaiv, we've observed Ukrainians continue to defend the city. Russian forces still appear to remain outside of the city to the north east."

"Mariupol remains isolated, with Russian forces north and east of the city. We continue to see heavy bombardment there. Ukrainians are defending the city."

"We assess the airspace over Ukraine remains contested. The Ukrainian Air Force is continuing to fly aircraft and employ air and missile defense. The Russians have launched more than 1080 missiles since the beginning of the war."

"In the maritime environment, no updates since yesterday."

"In the West, reports of missile strikes in the vicinity of Lviv International Airport appear to be accurate. We have no additional information to provide regarding the type, point of origin of the munition, or damage at this time."

"We assess that the Russians still have approximately 90 percent of their assembled combat power still available to them."
