Imagine you're raised in a culture where dancing is bad, but you really like dancing. You dance anyway because you love it, and then people are like, "you just love being rebellious. You're looking for any way you can to stick it to the man, to make people mad at you." 1/
And you're like, no, I love dancing.
But in this world, it's very rare for people to *actually* like dancing, so they see you dance and then, with extreme confidence, tell you your attempts at being edgy are pathetic, cause in their mind "actually liking dancing" isn't an option.
Maybe you're frustrated with the fact ppl get mad at your dancing, so sometimes you dance to make a point. Maybe sometimes you're like "fuck it, I'm gonna dance in front of you hard, to show I can, to express, and also maybe to show you it's okay, nothing bad is happening."
And so eventually, it becomes hard to distinguish for you why you're dancing. You started off just enjoying it, but now it's deeply intertwined with other people's reactions to you, and your values, and your anger and your love and your freedom.
And maybe when the entire world confidently tells you you're rebellious, and laughing at you as a liar when you insist no, maybe you eventually start to believe them. After all, don't u sometimes dance to make a point? Doesn't their anger actually cause you to dance harder?
And you keep dancing, but some part of you starts to believe you don't *really* like dancing, you're doing it because you're bad, you're unkind, you're trying to hurt people, you're traumatized, you're an edgelord. Your expression is trivial, dismissible, stupid.
And maybe one day someone comes along and is like "wow, your dancing is amazing, it's wonderful to see that in a world where everyone thinks dancing is so bad,"
and then suddenly you remember actually yes, you do love dancing, actually it's fucked up the world doesn't like it
and you get this new level of fury for the world constantly trying to gaslight you into the worst possible motivations for the thing that you love, because they can't comprehend that you might be genuine and honest in an expression they find foreign or threatening.
And maybe now when people tell you you're a rebellious edgelord, it hurts in some new way, like it's not just a misunderstanding but an attack on your understanding of yourself, and you become defensive about it, on guard.
And maybe the worst of all is when friends, or people close to you, who you thought maybe know you, joke about you dancing in order to piss people off. It's not like, totally wrong, but fuck, you have to be vigilant about knowing your own motivations everywhere, nowhere is safe.
And maybe you just want to scream at everyone, "I just love dancing, and it's okay, and I want to show you it's okay, and just because I have to rebel against you in order to dance doesn't mean my 'real' goal is rebellion. Also, fuck you"
(re: comments, I haven't seen the movie footloose and no this is not about sex)

How I Throw Parties: A Thread
(I am not the *most* experienced party-thrower, and most parties I've thrown have been for heavy nerd populations, so my strategies are targeted for this. And maybe my points are obvious to anyone who throws parties, but I like listing them anyway)
1. The people. I try really hard to get slightly more women than men (to dampen ambient male sexual aggression) and I have a 30% max rationalist population (or in-head-nerds) target. Cast a wider net for buner/festival/authentic connection ppl to balance it out.
2. The space. LIGHTING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, get it good and dim and inviting. Lots of flexible spaces of varying shapes for ppl to naturally congregate. Get the food/drink out of the kitchen or else the kitchen will be 100% packed. Have big space, loud space, quiet space.

I've spent a lot of time way deep in the psychedelic sauce and came out very permanently altered, but I seem to have somehow missed all the altered beliefs that seem to happen to many others who do a lot of eXtreme, experimental introspection. Why is this? 1/14
I don't think this is because I have any mystical virtue; maybe I just have genetics that mixed just right with a practice that accidentally avoided lots of the pitfalls that result in woo beliefs. But these are all guesses - I'd like to know why! 2/
I'm not against woo beliefs in principle, but I do think the rigor required for me to adopt a woo belief would sort of make it no longer woo. As in, I've had a powerful, direct experience of an Entity on psychedelics, but this is insufficient to make me believe in entities. 3/

Which rules do you use to evaluate sexual consent? In my rape survey, I found four main rule spectrums people seemed to fall on when evaluating rapeyness.

(You can be high or low on all of them, or high on just a few)

THREAD:
1. External motivation - How much motivation for the sex is not about the sex itself (e.g., getting paid, or making a partner happy) vs purely because of horniness? Some people view external motivation as clearly more consent-violatey than others.
2. Mental capacity - how much are you aware of what you're doing and the implications, going to endorse your actions later on, are of sound mind, sober, etc.? Some people have a lot more leniency for varied mental states, and others only find a narrow range to be consentable.

Completely agreed with Spencer here. Probably the thing I've learned the most throughout my thousands of questions and feedback is exactly this - and despite my experience, I still find it very hard to guarantee question design that definitely won't hit any of these problems. 1/
I've also had the experience of reading about studies or measures, and then when I see their actual questions I am shocked at how easily misinterpretable they are. Regularly they use questions I would never ever use in my own research. 2/
I thought for a while that they must have their reasons, it's gotta make sense somehow, they can't be just that bad at question design.
But lately I'm starting to suspect they just outright *are* bad at it? Which freaks me out a bit and feels like it has huge implications. 3/

THREAD: Male sexual energy I like vs male sexual energy I do not like
(these are examples, not absolute, just an attempt at pinning down a loose thing)

1/6
I DO NOT LIKE (in social gatherings):
*positions himself directly facing me, especially if blocking view/flow of others
*seems to agree with me too much, or
*does 'performative' disagreements; stuff that feels not-important or like he doesn't 'really' believe it
2/6
*seems both afraid of bringing up sex work and also interested in bringing it up at the same time
*downplays things about himself he thinks i might not like
*looks at me more than others, but also gives off like... sheepish vibes about it? like if i pointed it out he'd deny
