Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones, Amlwch, is the first purpose-built comprehensive school in Wales, probably in the UK. It was built as a result of the 1944 Education Act that brought in free secondary education for all to the age of 18. #ModernistMonday 1/4 Image
@RC_Archive @RCAHMWales @C20Cymru @C20Society @YsgolWales @AngleseyHist @Y_S_T_J @northwalescom @pplscollection @RuralModernism The school was designed by County Architect N. Squire Johnson, with construction starting in 1948. The foundation stone was laid by the Secretary of State for Education, D R Hardyman; the school opened officially in 1950 and building work was completed in 1952. 2/4 Image

The school was designed and built to an exceptionally high standard, with the architecture giving expression to the high ideals of post-war optimism in new standards of education. As such is it Grade II* listed by Cadw as “an excellent essay in architecture for education”. 4/4 Image

2/6 The Banc Du Neolithic enclosure occupies the summit of a low hill at the western end of the Preseli Ridge. It was discovered from the air by @RC_Survey and surveyed by us in 2005. It has the title of being the first dated Neolithic enclosure in Wales.⤵️ Image
