This awareness as individual is present only in Jagrat (wakeful conscious state -awareness of the without) and Swapna ( dream conscious state - awareness of the within) phases of mind.
Awareness as individual is absent in Sushupti ( deep sleep conscious state - no awareness of without or within) and Jagrat Sushupti ( wakeful sleep conscious state - no awareness of within or without unless willed) phases of mind.
Functioning mind alone can cause awareness of without or within as thought forms. Thought and feeling are responsible for identifying individual as body and person.
When mind is not functioning and taking rest, that awareness as individual disappears and the consciousness becomes pure consciousness, having no experience or thought or feeling in the awareness of mind.

Our awareness as individual is not present always. It is present only in wakeful and dream conscious states or phases of mind.
Our "I" feeling as am, me, mine, is transient with conscious state of mind.
Thus when it is realized that our "I" is mere thought, we will awaken into a different conscious state of mind - transcending the mind rather the resting mind.
We are always engaged in thoughts and hence awareness of us as body and person. The "I" thought or feeling is also a virtual phenomenon that disappears in deep sleep and wakeful sleep conscious states or phases of mind.
The Real Identity of Individual is being a mere seer, observer, witness, spectator uninvolved in the functions of the mind. This is called the state of realization and also liberation.
