Assange isn't just any journalist who has been effectively imprisoned for a decade and actually imprisoned for 3 years, now charged with *espionage*.
He's responsible for breaking more major stories than all his media critics *combined*. And that's why he's imprisoned.

Last February, every major press freedom and civil liberties group, including @ACLU, united to condemn the Assange prosecution on the grounds it constitutes a grave danger to core press freedoms. That plea was ignored, so this "grave assault" continues:

The true test for whether a society is free is not how it treats its establishment servants who spout state messaging. Even in tyrannies, the Wolf Blitzers and Chris Hayes's thrive. The true test is how *dissidents* are treated: like Assange (imprisoned) and Snowden (in exile).
