In every war, in every country, anyone off-key in any way, who questions government orthodoxies and policies, is automatically branded a traitor, guilty of being "on the other side," propaganda mouthpieces for the Enemy. Neocons perfected this dark art and it's most visible now.
There has never been more dissent-free unity and lockstep consensus among the 2 parties since at least 9/11. Those demanding US involvement in the war for Ukraine have won. Votes in Congress look like Israel votes: 426-7. Public opinion has shifted radically. Very little dissent.
There are like 11 people with a platform who question or deviate in any way from the bipartisan DC consensus -- supported by Bernie Sanders to Marco Rubio and all in between. Yet there's an obsession on this tiny pocket of dissent because religious unity needs heretics to hate.
Around the world, there's huge amounts of dissent on the war. Leftists frequently blame NATO provocations while condemning Russia. Many on the right to do, too. But in the US, the narrative is "the world" is united: even as the world's largest countries reject the West's unity.
If you're in the US or a NATO country, you're in a radically closed propaganda system. Much dissent has been banned or demonized to the point of invisibility. It may be you're still 100% right, but at least recognize that everyone in war is propagandized, warranting skepticism.
"In a context where elite mistakes and hawkish temptations could have atomic consequences, to read dissenters out of the debate makes the path to destruction much too wide and smooth for comfort." -- @DouthatNYT, "Why We Need Wartime Dissent"
Western media spent years warning the Azov Battalion and related militias were not just neo-Nazis but were the most powerful neo-Nazi force in Europe given their integration into the military and state.
That's now not only taboo to say but these same outlets have renounced this.
Back in 2015, when James Clapper wanted Obama to flood Ukraine with lethal arms -- something Obama opposed because, he said, Ukraine wasn't vital enough to the US -- I detailed the power of Azov using mainstream media sources. This is all now erased:
Azov's power doesn't justify a Russian invasion of Ukraine. But that doesn't make it irrelevant.
At the very least, efforts should be made to prevent the massive amount of lethal arms flooding Ukraine ending up in their hands. And we shouldn't make stars of their adherents.
Julian Assange is marrying his fiancee @StellaMoris1 today in a high-security prison because the US and UK - so deeply committed to democracy and press freedoms that they'll risk war to defend them -- have imprisoned him for 3 years and are working to keep imprisoned for life:
The Brazilian prosecutor who led the prosecution of Lula and became a national hero among some, was just ordered by a court to pay Lula $75,000 for defaming Lula by publicly accusing him of being head of an organized crime ring. Meanwhile, Lula leads all 2022 polls.
In 2019, Lula was in prison on a 10-year sentence. His judge, @SF_Moro was the all-powerful Justice Minister. Now, Lula is free and the favorite to be win. That judge, also running, is disgraced and 30 points behind. And now this prosecutor has to pay Lula. Quite a turnaround.
(Correction: the lead prosecutor and former national hero, @deltanmd, has been ordered to pay Lula R$ 75,000, not $75,000. It was for this laughable, third-grade Power Point he made and showed to the public to "prove" Lula was the Kingpin of all organized crime).
Ukraine's President Zelensky suspends 11 opposition parties, using the same rationale Putin invokes when doing so: they're subversive, with ties to foreign enemies. One of the parties has 10% of elected seats in Ukraine's parliament:
This is a great, nuanced article by @arisroussinos on serious neo-Nazism in Ukraine's military. It's false to say Ukraine is run by Nazis, worse to claim it justifies Russia's invasion. But the West is radically and dangerously minimizing their power:
As Roussinos writes: Europe "has many extreme Right-wing groups, but only in Ukraine do they possess their own tank and artillery units, with the state’s support." @fbfsubstack adds vital nuance. Russia's claims are false, but the West's erasure also is:
Both @thetimes and the @guardian published articles today claiming Russian cosmonauts, in a display of great bravery, chose to wear the Ukrainian colors to protest the war. Read this thread and decide if it’s true.
It's unfortunate that the @NYPost is one of the few large US outlets willing to hold accountable the cretins in the US security state for the lies they told about the Biden emails being "Russian disinformation" - designed to manipulate the 2020 election - but that's our reality:
These "former intelligence officials" - trained career disinformation agents, who were supposed to manipulate other countries' politics, not the US's - have the same contempt for the public as the media outlets they command: refuse to admit their lies:
Here's a great breakdown from @vanguard_pod -- one of the best and most honest left-wing shows on the internet -- about the role played by @theintercept's editors in spreading the CIA's "Russian disinformation" line, and how @TheYoungTurks supported them:
