this is recursive – once you get out of the hyperlocal context of your family unit, your peer group, you find there’s a wider community with its own issues, it’s own baggage and backstory
this applies not just to space but to time- the present now is embedded in past & future

been thinking about this again because I’ve been vaguely troubled by my perception of the general absence of visible big-picture long-term thinker-planner-doers who aren’t institutions

well it’s like
once a group coalesces - any group - the majority of the members in the group seem to get caught up in upholding the boundaries of the group. this is good for group cohesion in the short run I guess but in the long run it’s death

the majority of a group’s members are relatively silent, inert, malleable, bla bla. it’s a minority of the group that speak loudest and they end up influencing how the group behaves. People uncomfortable with this exit the group, which reinforces this

so for a group to be healthy - and I’m being a bit abstract here because it does vary depending on the context, purpose, etc - it has to continually take in new members, new perspectives, and so on. A culture must be updated to be alive. It’s a difficult tightrope to walk
