The sanctions on #Venezuela , a democracy that hasn't invaded anyone, are much harsher than those that have been imposed #Russia.

& of course sanctions on both countries are illegal acts of war unless there is a Chpt 7 UN Security Council resolution authorizing them.

THREAD
A detailed #Russia vs. @Venezuela sanctions comparison will soon be availbale, but let's compare & contrast sanctins on Vzla with sanctions that were imposed in Apartheid South Africa from 1985-1990
A friend pass along this 1992 paper to me which I will draw from. It cites a South Africa (SA) bank estimate saying sanctions cost apartheid SA $20 bn from 1985-1990. Vzla lost between $12 - 20 bn PER YEAR from 2017-2021 (just in lost oil revenues) due to sanctions
The oil revenue loss estimates for #Venezula come from the paper linked to below which also mentions other loss due to sanctoins (on top of lost oil revenues) ...

sanctionsandsecurity.org/wp-content/upl…
for example, $5 bn in blocked access to IMF special drawin rights (SDRs)

$7 bn in lost acces to emegency COVID-related financing from IMF

$1.9 bn blocked acces to gold held by Bank of England etc...
So its not even close, but there are other considerations. In 1986 Congress had to override Reagan's veto to impose santions on Apartheid SA at all. Think of the message that sent to Sa and foreign investors. Two obvious ones :
1) That it would not take much change for SA to get the sanctions weakened or removed
2) The Reagan government could hardly be expected to aggressively enfore the sanctions Congress forced on it. So "overcompliance" could hardly have been as big a problem as with Vzla
Ok but I gave you current $ value etimates fo rthe impact of the sanctions on SA & Vzla. What happens whwn you take into accoun the size of the SA ecnomcy in 1990 compared to Vzla ecnomcy between 2017-2021? Actually the comprison in US dollar vaue impact is simple becasue ...
SA's gdp was rough $100 bn in 1990, as was Vzla's (according to the IMF) in 2018

There is certainly no justification for this abomination of a @guardian article on the #ukrianerussiawar

No wonder the "west" is going apeshit with censorship.
"Journalism" like his literally puts the entire world at risk

Some counterpoints follow
Yes there was a western backed coup in #Ukrain in 2014.

The power exerted by Nazis in #Ukriane is not reflected in dismal electoral performance. Only 3 months ago Ukriane stood alone at the UN with the US voting down a resolution glorifying Nazis

It's hard not to fall into complacency about the depravity of all western institutions. They faunt it so relentlesly
As @caitoz said “ One of the main things I do here is try to help articulate the scope of the horrors of the empire. Because we're in it, and it's so aggressively normalized by the mass media, it becomes easy to overlook, like water for a fish”

Russell was my 1rst intellectual hero many decades ago, but today I see a western imperial bias in him that I didn't back then. For example, in his summary of Hegel, Russell caually asserts that the USA was a "society without extreme poverty"
Say what?
www2.census.gov/programs-surve…
Not clear if Russell referred only to 1946 (when History of Western Philosophy came out, but it was an absurd thing to say even if referring only to that year, never mind any period before that in US history. And he says this as he bashes Hegel (justly) forGerman state worship
That said, I believe Russell saying that the theoretical underpinnings of Hegel's philosophy - as far as nature of truth/reality go - was based on faulty logic. But that's not same thing as Hegel's theory of history, which cld be useful even if theoretical foundations were shaky

In #Ecuador the rightwing Lasso government has used police to ram through changes to the CPPCS (a body that overseas selection process for judical council, auditor general & prosecutors etc..)

Here is some brief background on that. The sad story begins in May of 2017

THREAD
In May of 2017, Lenin Moreno took office & immediately shit-canned the left policy platform that got him elected and adopted the one of his rightwing opponent who lost that year - Ecuador's current president Guillermo Lasso.

A key target of Moreno was immediately the CPCCS
In 2018, Moreno handpicked a "transitory" CPCCS that was supposed to step aside for an elected one. BUt the trasitory CPCCS (CPCCS-T) was grossly illegal. It was put together illegaly and then behaved even more illegally & tyranically once convened.

Quotes from Domenico Losurdo's book "STALIN: THE HISTORY AND CRITIQUE OF A BLACK LEGEND" will be placed in this thread - along with comments on it
Thomas Mann quote "To place Russian communism and Nazi-fascism on the same moral place, in the measure that both are totalitarian, is superficial at best, fascism at worst...." Image
In the 90s, I recall US General Schwarzkopf doing a long segment on national TV just to pedlde the claim of Stalin's massive incompetence regarding threat posed by Hitler - a view echoed in Kruschev's "Serect Report".

Losurdo's refutation in Chpt 1 is absolutely devastating
