Thrilled to have @jack_turban discuss his cutting edge work on transgender youth at @unmcpsychiatry!

"Unfortunately, transgender youth experience a high rate of bullying and a high rate of psychiatric morbidity, especially anxiety & depression. This includes suicidal thoughts." ImageImage
"If you use the wrong pronouns, you might remind a transgender or gender diverse youth of a past invalidation from a parent, a bully, etc. If you use the wrong pronouns, just apologize. You are trying to be on their team."

- @jack_turban at #UNMCPsychGR Image
"If you are working with a kid who is transitioning, it's really important to work with the school and the community to ensure it is a safe environment."

- @jack_turban at #UNMCPsychGR Image
Q: Advice for evaluation for gender dysphoria?

A: @jack_turban: There is an amazing model in Amsterdam which has a 6-month therapy evaluation.

When it came to the US, it was an adolescent medicine doc often w/o a mental health therapist. Different clinics do it differently. ImageImage
Q: Advice for organized psychiatry?

A: @jack_turban: We are doing a better job. The key is speed of response in supporting transgender youth. Before, it took years to condemn conversion therapy. Now, it is a timely press release from the psychiatric orgs. Speed matters. Image

"How do we show up as allies in the workplace? We are not going to mansplain for the next hour. We asked a lot of women on what their experience is when a male really shows up as an ally. Partnership is key."

- David Smith & Brad Johnson at @unmc Breakthrough Thinking Summit
"Women are not receiving the same level of support - including sponsorship."

- David Smith, @unmc Breakthrough Thinking Summit
"According to data from Boston Consulting Group, the participation of men as allies in gender equity was a huge predictor as to whether women felt their organization was making progress toward gender diversity."

As the pandemic impacts women in healthcare, we held a #GiveHerAReasonToStay panel at @unmc @NebraskaMed.

Chancellor @jeffreypgold, "I would love to become the most inclusive organization for women. We need to redouble our efforts to listen, respond and then act."

(1/8) ImageImage
Dr. @AllisonGrennan, "The pandemic has worsened the cognitive load for women. Now, we have to worry about whether we can go to work and keep our children safe."

Her tip: Leaders, look at meeting times vs. caregiving duties: "If the meeting is 6 am, I can't be there."

(2/8) Image
Dr. @RUBraveEnough, "Since the pandemic, I have had 200 personal conversations with women physicians who've said, 'I don't know if I can do this anymore.'"

Her tip: "Every woman who talks to you about work/life conflicts represents 10 more. See it as an opportunity."

“In order to address the suffering within the ‘soul of America,’ we have to address mental health as part of health care, not separate from it."

- @PJK4brainhealth on the need to address #mentalhealth in COVID response.

A thread on the 6 priorities (1 of 7). h/t @JudgeWren
Priority 1: Change the national conversation about mental health and suicide.

As a psychiatrist, I know that a common response to mental health crises is silence.

When we speak up, we affirm people we know, love and respect who are living with invisible pain.

(2/7)
Priority 2: Increase access to evidence-based treatments for substance use and mental health disorders in specialty and primary care.

Integrated care means having access to therapists and prescribers for treatment as part of the primary care team.

Access saves lives.
