Some anonymous zero-follower accounts are now jumping into my replies here to back the Indian government's intimidation of a journalist. Not suspicious at all... 🙄
Wider question: Why have the EU and US been so unwilling to recognize and speak out about #India's disastrous regression on fundamental rights under Modi?
On 4 March, Russian forces in #Bucha rounded up five men and summarily executed one of them.
A witness told @hrw that soldiers forced the five men to kneel on the side of the road, pulled their T-shirts over their heads, and shot one of the men in the back of the head.
Now, all the world is seeing the horrific aftermath of Russian atrocities in #Bucha, #Ukraine.
But these terrible crimes did not only happen in Bucha...
We're about to improve it & one new feature is more reader input.
I'm thinking of setting up a Discord for a running chat about the content with 50-100 interested readers.
What do you think?
The idea would be to have the Discord group make suggestions for topics and interview subjects in the "Daily Brief", and tell us what you liked and didn't like in past editions and what you want to see more of in future editions.
The "Daily Brief" has tens of thousands of subscribers, and I don't think it would be practical or possible to have everyone involved. 50 to 100 seems about right.
In #Mariupol, #Ukraine, local authorities have said that Russia has forcibly evacuated 20,000-30,000 residents to non-government-controlled areas and to Russia.
If true, it could be another war crime: forcible transfers are prohibited under the “laws of war”.
🧵...
Let’s first understand what “forcible” means. It’s not just the obvious thing of being marched out at gunpoint…
A transfer is still forcible even when a person "volunteers" because they fear consequences such as violence, duress, or detention if they remain, and the occupying power is taking advantage of a coercive environment to conduct the transfer.
