Next week, I'll be at @journalismfest #IJF22. Wanted to see ⁦@RanaAyyub⁩ talk on intimidation of journalists in India…

…but India's government - apparently keen to help her prove her point - is preventing her from leaving the country.

More on the case in this thread:
Some anonymous zero-follower accounts are now jumping into my replies here to back the Indian government's intimidation of a journalist. Not suspicious at all... 🙄

Blocking, blocking, blocking...
Wider question: Why have the EU and US been so unwilling to recognize and speak out about #India's disastrous regression on fundamental rights under Modi?

Deranged, deliberate cruelty and violence against #Ukraine civilians by Russian forces.

New Human Rights Watch report documents:

➡️ rape,

➡️ murder,

➡️ other atrocities.

In #Bucha and elsewhere.

These should be investigated as war crimes.

On 4 March, Russian forces in #Bucha rounded up five men and summarily executed one of them.

A witness told @hrw that soldiers forced the five men to kneel on the side of the road, pulled their T-shirts over their heads, and shot one of the men in the back of the head.
Now, all the world is seeing the horrific aftermath of Russian atrocities in #Bucha, #Ukraine.

But these terrible crimes did not only happen in Bucha...

Getting attacked on Twitter right now by:

a) people defending Poland’s government for blocking humanitarian aid & arresting aid workers;

b) people defending India’s government for intimidating a journalist.

Both governments increasingly authoritarian in recent years.
It’s always a bit troubling to see people so vehemently defending the human rights abuses of their governments.
What’s interesting, however, is how similar the vitriol is, even from places that are culturally quite different.

A mix of ad hominem, copy-paste government propaganda, and racist/xenophobic junk…

Everything to avoid the issue of the government’s wrongdoing itself.

Volunteers on #Poland's eastern border are trying to help desperate people fleeing war & oppression.

Polish police are treating these volunteers as criminals for providing aid.

🧵
On 22 March, Polish police arrested four volunteers for helping a family with seven children.

A prosecutor charged the volunteers with organizing illegal immigration - a crime punishable by up to eight years in prison.
On 25 March, police arrested another volunteer as she sat in her car.

Court proceedings against the five volunteers are pending.

⭐️ QUESTION ⭐️

As you know, @hrw produces a "Daily Brief" hrw.org/the-day-in-hum…

We're about to improve it & one new feature is more reader input.

I'm thinking of setting up a Discord for a running chat about the content with 50-100 interested readers.

What do you think?
The idea would be to have the Discord group make suggestions for topics and interview subjects in the "Daily Brief", and tell us what you liked and didn't like in past editions and what you want to see more of in future editions.
The "Daily Brief" has tens of thousands of subscribers, and I don't think it would be practical or possible to have everyone involved. 50 to 100 seems about right.

1⃣ Don’t treat Taliban officials as leaders in good global standing:

Governments should advocate to end exemptions to the travel ban restricting some senior Taliban leaders.
Governments should avoid meetings and locales that would generate prestige for the Taliban leadership.

No photo ops.

Ensure women are well represented in delegations and if it is possible to include Afghan women, do so.

In #Mariupol, #Ukraine, local authorities have said that Russia has forcibly evacuated 20,000-30,000 residents to non-government-controlled areas and to Russia.

If true, it could be another war crime: forcible transfers are prohibited under the “laws of war”.

🧵...
Let’s first understand what “forcible” means. It’s not just the obvious thing of being marched out at gunpoint…
A transfer is still forcible even when a person "volunteers" because they fear consequences such as violence, duress, or detention if they remain, and the occupying power is taking advantage of a coercive environment to conduct the transfer.
