There are indeed some basics concepts that appear to escape the comprehension of the Commission and of Mrs Von der Leyen, in some cases particularly worrying, such as the role itself of the EU
1) It is the EU reputation that is at stake, not China’s
2) Even if it were true that it is China’s reputation that is at stake, the role of the EU is to worry about its own reputation, not that of others sovereign states
3) The EU asking China to “take side” shows an incredible misunderstanding of how China works. Their leader do what they think is in the best interest of their citizens and do not need to “take side”, just “to be seen” or please othe countries
4) The EU asking China to take side is an act against the peace process. VdL does not understand that only maintaining neutrality can offer a country the role of trying to mediate. If we want china to mediate, we must ask them to remain neutral, not to take sides
5) That they don’t understand is proven by the fact that the EU has taken sides, but still does not get why all its mediating efforts are failing. I would say the same for my own county Italy, who thansk to some inappropriate official statements cannot be a mediator
