SCOTUS makes history w/ #KetanjiBrownJackson ascending to the bench. However I maintain that the system of nominating & confirming judges to SCOTUS is broken and her exceptional qualifications don't cover up the corruption & malfeasance that placed her recent predecessors there
If a secret ballot of Senators was taken before the hearings , and revealed after today's final vote the results would likely be identical 53-47. Nobody changes thier minds during confirmation hearings, "swing votes" like Ben Sasse are mostly playing at being undecided for TV
McConnell will NOT hold SCOTUS hearings for any future Democratic presidential nominations if the GOP holds the Senate, a precedent that will be followed by ANY GOP Senate leader from now on. SCOTUS is now in a constant state of reputational and constitutional crisis
Any high court where replacements can be held up or simply ignored indefinitely depending on the whims of partisan politics is not a sustainable system. Gorsuch - Stolen seat
Kavanaugh - Lying, questionable finances, lacked judicial temperament
ACB - Barely qualified
America desperately needs court reform. We literally had insurrection apologists questioning a future SCOTUS judge. And despite perhaps being the MOST qualified SCOTUS justice certainly in my lifetime, #KetanjiBrownJackson can't fix what is an inherently broken nomination system

South Africa doesn't just have a better constitution than the United States (as @ElieNYC recently said on my podcast) but the way they've handled the corruption of Jacob Zuma, the former president, should be the template for the US and Trump aljazeera.com/news/2022/4/1/…
Zuma's history of corruption and sexual assault has always drawn comparisons to Trump - @Trevornoah has been pointing this out for years - Here's a segment from 2016. But unlike the US the South African government has actually held Zuma accountable fb.watch/caOpn8hcYX/
Zuma turned himself last summer to serve 15 months for refusing to testify and basically obstruction of Justice (sound familiar) and riots/protests erupted around the country as his supporters thought the charges were Trumped up by state officials bbc.com/news/world-afr…
The entire #KetanjiBrownJacksonHearing has been performance art at a time when #SCOTUS public approval ratings are at an all time low. (SCOTUS public approval is lower than after Bush v Gore 😬). It's bread an circuses to give the court a patina of legitimacy.
The process is broken, Gorsuch, Barrett and Kavanagh arguably should not be on the bench. They are only there through the machinations of a GOP Senate leadership that was obsessed with 1) Undermining Obama 2) Ensuring Trump remained in office should his 2020 lawsuits get that far
Even the most casual American voters saw the GOP senate steal a seat from Obama. Millions watched as Kavanagh screamed and pouted to avoid answering questions about his finances, alleged sexual assaults (there were more than 1) and writings on torture during the Bush years
#TheBatman is one of the most talked about and overanalyzed heros in American pop culture. That's why he's had over a dozen films - But that longevity has been earned by updating the character for each generation. That doesn't happen in #TheBatman
Batman is not a right wing fascist nor is he a liberal fighting against the privileged elite. But in a world where millions protested police brutality and racism a rich white guy who beats up random mostly brown folks needs to address that
You think #DefundthePolice is a bad message ? (Btw almost no credible Dems run on that slogan) take a look at how #FundthePolice plays w/ young black voters who are crucial in the midterms but are already skeptical of this administration #SOTU22
Biden's approval rating is under 40%. His approval w/ Black voters, the CORE Democratic constituency is in the 60's/70's. What part of that #SOTU was targeted to appeal to black voters? What black voter was moved from apathy to activism?
Today @RichelleCarey did an extensive thread on how for the first time in 18 years of voting in TX suddenly her registration was canceled. What part of the #SOTU gives hope to voters facing that issue around the country ?
Biden's success in placing black women on the federal bench is laudable, as is his pledge to put a black woman on SCOTUS. However those moves don't address the larger issues the country faces in terms of direct threats to Democracy from the MAGA covering GOP - short thread
There is consistent theme in some Democratic circles that Biden doesn't get enough credit for what he's done and he's hamstrung by Sinema and Manchin. Biden can both do good things AND be vastly underperforming on critical issues. Today's GA polls tell that story
The top issue for the core constituency of the Democratic Party is criminal justice reform. The president has failed symbolically and practically on that issue. Appointing black women to judgeships doesn't change that. Nor does it improve his flagging numbers with black voters
