I'm going on @DeadlineWH at 4 pm today but there are a few things I want to point out about today's #January6thCommitteeHearings Raffensperger blatantly lied. The average time to vote in Georgia was NOT less than 5 minutes. He IMPLEMENTED voter suppression laws ensuring majority black district voters had much longer waits npr.org/2020/10/17/924…

Finally getting to the final season of #Ozark - Much as I love the actress who played her, you'll never convince me that an African American actress couldn't have played Ruth and given this already great show a whole other dimension Oh wow, didn't expect the Killer Mike guest appearance !

The idea that a white single mother of a bi-racial child is angry about an anti-racism curriculum....in CHARLOTTESVILLE ....So she's suing the school, is too much nonsense for this early in the morning Also....to go on Fox News with this nonsense within 48 hours of a racist mass shooting is probably a good indicator that thos kid's homelife is hell

The @GreenfieldRIV school district fired teacher Kim Morrison - after parents who DIDN'T have students in her class - Complained that she was teaching #CriticalRaceTheory with a worksheet for the YA novel "Dear Martin" by @getnicced @GreenfieldRIV is one of the whitest school districts in Missouri w/ 7% minority enrollment compared to the state average of 29%. It's also one of the poorest PERFORMING school districts with below Missouri average math/reading and graduation rates. But #CRT is the problem?🤔

Much of the conversation over the last 2 weeks about stand-up comedy & mean comics has mostly revealed how little standup most people consume nowadays. To say most standup is mean or angry is like saying all 90s rap was gangster and violent. Perhaps diversify your comedy diet? There are plenty of high profile comedians who don't poke fun at their audiences, or really 'punch down' at any particular group. Just there were rappers in the 90's who weren't grossly misogynistic - they may not get the same air play but it existed and was available

SCOTUS makes history w/ #KetanjiBrownJackson ascending to the bench. However I maintain that the system of nominating & confirming judges to SCOTUS is broken and her exceptional qualifications don't cover up the corruption & malfeasance that placed her recent predecessors there If a secret ballot of Senators was taken before the hearings , and revealed after today's final vote the results would likely be identical 53-47. Nobody changes thier minds during confirmation hearings, "swing votes" like Ben Sasse are mostly playing at being undecided for TV

South Africa doesn't just have a better constitution than the United States (as @ElieNYC recently said on my podcast) but the way they've handled the corruption of Jacob Zuma, the former president, should be the template for the US and Trump
aljazeera.com/news/2022/4/1/… Zuma's history of corruption and sexual assault has always drawn comparisons to Trump - @Trevornoah has been pointing this out for years - Here's a segment from 2016. But unlike the US the South African government has actually held Zuma accountable

The entire #KetanjiBrownJacksonHearing has been performance art at a time when #SCOTUS public approval ratings are at an all time low. (SCOTUS public approval is lower than after Bush v Gore 😬). It's bread an circuses to give the court a patina of legitimacy. The process is broken, Gorsuch, Barrett and Kavanagh arguably should not be on the bench. They are only there through the machinations of a GOP Senate leadership that was obsessed with 1) Undermining Obama 2) Ensuring Trump remained in office should his 2020 lawsuits get that far

I had a lot of thoughts about #TheBatman - I wanted to love it, but this movie fell far short of what it could be
thegrio.com/2022/03/04/the… #TheBatman is one of the most talked about and overanalyzed heros in American pop culture. That's why he's had over a dozen films - But that longevity has been earned by updating the character for each generation. That doesn't happen in #TheBatman

You think #DefundthePolice is a bad message ? (Btw almost no credible Dems run on that slogan) take a look at how #FundthePolice plays w/ young black voters who are crucial in the midterms but are already skeptical of this administration #SOTU22 Biden's approval rating is under 40%. His approval w/ Black voters, the CORE Democratic constituency is in the 60's/70's. What part of that #SOTU was targeted to appeal to black voters? What black voter was moved from apathy to activism?

Biden's success in placing black women on the federal bench is laudable, as is his pledge to put a black woman on SCOTUS. However those moves don't address the larger issues the country faces in terms of direct threats to Democracy from the MAGA covering GOP - short thread There is consistent theme in some Democratic circles that Biden doesn't get enough credit for what he's done and he's hamstrung by Sinema and Manchin. Biden can both do good things AND be vastly underperforming on critical issues. Today's GA polls tell that story

COVID infection rates have dropped since the December holiday season but are still higher in many areas than last fall. But institutions from schools to businesses have essentially told workers "So what" go back and risk your long term health and potentially worse This is driven by a naive desire to return to "normal" even as the Omicron Variant has become prevalent. Of the over 20 people I know personally who've contracted COVID in the last month all of them are vaccinated and most were boosted and range from 16 to 52

I'll believe it when I see it. There are a few misconceptions about why there haven't been any black majority owners in the #NFL - A short thread on why it hasn't happened before.... While the process of #NFL ownership can be a bit murky here are the main requirements.
1. You have to have between 30-40% of the team value up front AND be able to buy out the next 2 largest investors. Considering the average team is about 3 billion that's a lot of liquid income

Finished #Yellowjackets - Am I missing something here? Because the framing it set up for Jackie to be the 'mean girl' but I absolutely empathize with Jackie and think that Shauna is a horrible friend and person. (Minor spoilers in thread but the finale was 4 days ago 🤷‍♂️) There's a sort of lazy trope in TV that the viewer is supposed to dislike the "popular mean girl" but by all accounts Jackie wasn't any more cruel or petty than anybody else. Just popular and a good team captain

#Yellowjackets Lisa & Akilah are written horribly. I'm used to black characters in these majority white shows being written in ways that don't resemble black people anywhere at anytime. But the lack of depth and development for a couple who take up so much screentime is horrible *Taissa*

#Seahawks twitter us a funny space. The same folks who were screaming to bench Wilson for Geno after the Packers game were saying this team has a chance ywo weeks later when he won against the 49ers. Maybe the team/coaching is bad and it's not all on the QB 🤷🏿‍♂️ Debates over what constitutes an "Elite quarterback" and a "Quarterback you can win a superowl with" are completely driven by pre-existing biases about QBs which - Hate to say it - are filtered through race class and culture lenses.

- @AbbottElemABC Btw there's already been a reference to Zach Ertz - Which is a pretty good #Eagles deep cut for a show based in Philly

The issue here is that white Americans in the center/ left cannot win elections w/out a coalition with the primary victims of systematic racism. They resent this dependency so they resort to attacking the victims (Black folks) or allying with the perpetrators of the violence Democrats can't win without 90% black voters and high turnout. Centrist democrats respond by blaming #Wokeness which is code for "The Black's have too much power" thus thier fantasy of holding on to an increasingly small and disinterested share of "working class whites"

This mindset fascinates me. When black people critique Hollywood for failing at representation for decades mostly white studios said we should stop begging to get into movies and "make our own". Now that is the go-to response for black people caping for problematic television Pointing out the consistent erasure of MOC and the one sided diversity of straight and queer couples in high profile #Netflix shows amounts to "begging" for inclusion 🤔 Would he make that same argument about Afro-Latin erasure in #TheHeights ? That criticism was "begging" ?

A quick thread about #Superman coming out as bisexual. As a general rule it annoys me that people who know nothing about comics drive discourse about a format they haven't read in 20 years but people are shocked or supportive - I'm cautiously optimistic Jon Kent is Clark Kent's son from various merged realities & the potential future superman. This matters because while introducing new characters with queer identities is good its not as bold as having established characters come out *Ahem* Wonder Woman
